General Summary

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician III is a healthcare employee who performs specific job responsibilities under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. The role involves providing pharmacy services, including distributing pharmaceuticals, inventory control, preparing and distributing intravenous admixtures, conducting compliance audits, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. The Technician works as part of an interdisciplinary patient care team under the direction of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and collaborates with Chemotherapy/Oncology and/or RIVA (KGH Only).

Responsibilities
  • Dispensing:
    • A. Interpret patient-specific labeling correctly regarding medication, dose, dosage form, packing size and quantity, and prepare the final product for review by a registered pharmacist.
    • B. Replenish medications in the Automated Distribution Cabinets accurately, following departmental standards for controlled and non-controlled substances.
    • C. Manage medication delivery process to ensure timely and accurate delivery and retrieval of discontinued medications.
    • D. Complete unit dose cart‑fill and first dose dispensing activities.
    • E. Complete dispense preparation.
  • Pharmacy Information Systems:
    • A. Maintain competency in pharmacy information systems, automation dispensing, and other pharmacy technologies (e.g., Pharmacy Keeper), including report generation, troubleshooting, and patient profile review.
  • Support Function:
    • A. Exchange crash carts and/or restock pharmaceutical trays.
    • B. Check expiration dates for central pharmacy, automation distribution cabinets, other storage areas, and kits such as the Transport kit.
    • C. Support inventory processes: ordering, receiving, handling patients’ own medications.
    • D. Repurpose oral suspensions, solutions, and tablets into unit dose packaging.
  • Patient Safety / Performance Improvement:
    • A. Maintain a High Reliability Environment by following safety measures, keeping the workspace clean, using equipment appropriately, and reporting near misses or safety issues.
    • B. Document and complete required records (e.g., temperature checks, pharmacy inspections, Pharmacy Keeper logs) with at least 95% accuracy.
    • C. Understand and follow hazardous material guidelines (USP Chapter 800).
  • Training and

    Education:
    • A. Participate in on‑job training of new pharmacy personnel, students, residents, and pharmacists.
    • B. Engage in ongoing educational activities to acquire and validate knowledge.
    • C. Complete formal nationally recognized education in sterile compounding and USP Chapter 797 (e.g., ASHP competence).
    • D. Complete specialized education in hazardous compounding and USP Chapter 800.
    • E. Present at least one Technician Pearl per evaluation period.
  • Critical Thinking and Development:
    • A. Answer phones and address concerns or direct calls to appropriate personnel.
    • B. Prioritize work based on patient need, efficiency, and pharmacy policies and procedures; independently handle routine problem scenarios within scope.
  • Compounding:
    • A. Comply with USP 797 guidelines and Bayhealth policies, including growth media testing and gowning procedures.
    • B. Clean and maintain sterile compounding areas per USP 797/800 and Bayhealth policies.
    • C. Stock sterile compounding area with intravenous solutions, additives, and all other supplies.
    • D. Document lot number, expiration date, and waste for dispense prep.
    • E. Prepare on‑demand IVs timely per department guidelines.
  • Hazardous Compounding:
    • A. Receive, review, and prepare orders for hazardous and non-hazardous medications, including pre‑medications and investigational agents.
