This role leads a team of database administrators to ensure availability, security, backup and recovery, and capacity planning across multiple database technologies in a federal IT environment.

The lead partners with application, infrastructure, and security teams to optimize schemas, queries, and environments for reliability and throughput. The position also establishes standards, automation, and monitoring practices that keep database services stable, auditable, and aligned with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and enforce standards for backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster‑recovery strategies across on‑premises and cloud‑hosted databases.

  • Collaborate with application development and analytics teams to design and optimize schemas, indexing, and queries that support performance, scalability, and maintainability.

  • Oversee database security, access controls, and auditing in alignment with organizational security policies and compliance obligations.

  • Utilize monitoring and capacity‑planning tools to track utilization, detect performance or reliability risks, and recommend improvements or scaling strategies.

  • Coordinate and prioritize work across the DBA team, providing guidance, mentoring, and technical direction while ensuring adherence to processes and documentation standards.

  • Support data‑warehousing, ETL, and integration initiatives by advising on data models, load strategies, and database configurations.

  • Develop and maintain database standards, procedures, and knowledge artifacts that promote consistency, automation, and effective support of mission‑critical services.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • 8+ years of hands‑on database administration experience with enterprise database systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or Postgre

SQL, including leadership or team‑lead responsibilities.

  • Proven proficiency in database security, backup and recovery, disaster‑recovery planning, and performance tuning in complex, multi‑database environments.

  • Experience supporting data‑warehousing, ETL processes, and data‑integration tools, including the ability to troubleshoot and optimize data pipelines.

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to coordinate work across DBAs and collaborate with application, infrastructure, and security teams.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust investigation and to work in a U.S.‑only federal IT context, with U.S. citizenship as specified.

  • Willingness and ability to travel 10–25% as needed to support stakeholder engagement, implementations, and operational reviews.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in at least two major database platforms (for example, SQL Server and Oracle) and familiarity with cloud database services.

  • Advanced DBA or cloud database certifications from major vendors (such as Oracle Certified Professional or Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate).

  • Experience implementing automation and infrastructure‑as‑code patterns for database deployment, configuration, and maintenance.

  • Background leading database teams in highly regulated or audit‑intensive environments, including responsibility for standards, documentation, and compliance evidence.
