Introduction
The Delaware Environmental Laboratory is a full-service lab that tests and assesses water, air, soil, hazardous materials, and biological samples. The lab helps facilitate the management of Delaware’s natural resources and the protection of Delaware’s water resources. Summary StatementThis position is responsible for sample collection, receipt and processing, preparation of standards, reagents, or other chemicals; preparation of environmental samples for chemical analysis using digestion or extraction techniques; and conducting analyses for water quality surveillance and emerging contaminant assessments using complex laboratory instrumentation under the guidance of a technical supervisor. Work completed in accordance with EPA/Standard Methods, Delaware Hazardous Substance Cleanup Act, and State regulations.
Required to follow good laboratory practices, utilize laboratory information systems and statistics, maintain analytical instrumentation & follow Standard Operating Procedures and quality assurance processes.
Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level.

- A Bachelors degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Science or related field.

- Prepares samples for instrument analysis, interprets instrument recordings and documents test results.
- Uses analytical chemistry techniques including state-of-the-art instrumentation to gather data involving samples.
- Analyzes laboratory data to determine quantity and quality of toxins, pathogens, chemical and biochemical constituents.
- Prepares reports identifying samples, explains testing methods and documents findings and conclusions of analysis.
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Analytical Chemist II. Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
- Six months experience in generating and interpreting chemical test data by performing quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis.
- Six months experience in selecting laboratory test methods and procedures.
- Six months experience in physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry.
- Six months experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation including calibration and maintenance.
- Six months experience in technical report writing.
