Summary Statement

In this position the incumbent will serve as the Physical Plant Mechanic III, assisting with on‑going incidental and preventative maintenance and repairs during routine duties, delivering supplies to all DMVs statewide, inspecting facilities, reporting any issues, and providing support to the Division for daily operation. The incumbent will use computerized systems to place supply orders, work with vendors regarding repairs and quotes, maintain the warehouse, and perform other duties assigned within their scope of work.

Functions
  • Performs preventative routine and complex maintenance repairs on interior and exterior building structures, fixtures and appurtenances, bridges, heavy‑duty structural and mechanical equipment, HVAC and other systems.
  • Performs restoration and renovation on facilities, bridges and/or historical buildings; builds partitions and shelving from sketches or plans, renovates furniture and equipment, and may design layouts to ensure the most efficient use of space.
  • Recommends referral of jobs beyond financial or capability limits to private contractors.
  • Maintains and repairs compressors, pumps, hydraulic lifts, treatment and disposal plants, and operates and maintains HVAC systems and complex plumbing projects.
  • Operates and maintains life‑safety devices such as sprinkler systems.
  • May oversee the work of skilled, semi‑skilled maintenance and laboring personnel in performing specific assignments or in a training situation.
  • Maintains records of work performed, materials used and time spent on assignments and may secure materials and supplies through established procedures.
  • May perform highway lighting or drawbridge maintenance.
Job Requirements
  • Six months experience operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  • Six months experience performing work in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  • Six months experience in record keeping.
  • Knowledge of interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of estimating cost, time and materials for projects.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Pre‑employment drug testing is required as part of the hiring process.

As a condition of hire you must possess a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle county.
