This posting is for a full-time Equipment Mechanic position with the Caesar Rodney School District Transportation Department.
This position involves mechanical trade work at the full-performance level. Incumbents operate within standard guidelines and alternatives under the supervision of a technical superior. This level can work independently to troubleshoot and repair integrated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and related systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform preventative maintenance, including lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, and testing equipment.
- Use manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, adjust, and diagnose equipment malfunctions or defects.
- Repair and replace various parts and assemblies using mechanical power tools and component systems.
- Interpret schematics and blueprints to perform inspections, diagnosis, wiring procedures, and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, ignition, lighting, warning, injection assemblies and component systems.
- Respond to road service requests and assist with tow trucks and wreckers as needed.
- Conduct road tests and operational checks for diagnostic purposes to determine equipment deficiencies and for post maintenance tests.
- Clean and care for tools, equipment, and shop facilities.
- Follow all safety rules and practices and comply with EPA standards in the performance of duties.
- Diagnose and isolate malfunctions in integrated hydraulic, electronic, and mechanical systems. Perform intricate adjustments and alignments on front-end, brakes, and other drive line components using testing, measurement, and diagnostic equipment.
- Disassemble and overhaul major components of light and medium-duty engines and systems, including those used in vans and school buses.
- Evaluate and repair emission control systems and perform comprehensive engine tune-ups and adjustments on light and medium-duty engines and systems such as those used to power vans/school buses.
- Performs complex wiring procedures.
- Assemble and install specialized equipment using diagrams and schematics.
- Conduct comprehensive inspections using specialized tools, procedures, and equipment.
- Instruct operators in the application of preventative maintenance, as needed.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions relevant to the trade.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, tools and practices used in the trade.
- Knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines (gasoline and diesel: two and four-stroke) and related mechanical components, including air and hydraulic brake systems, electrical systems and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of the basic operation of diagnostic equipment.
- Skill in basic mathematical computation.
- Skill in the proper care and use of trade tools, machinery, materials and equipment.
- Ability to apply mechanical concepts and principles.
- Ability to interpret, understand, and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare written reports.
- Ability to diagnose and repair readily traceable equipment malfunctions.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Ability to instruct equipment operators in preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to learn basic welding principles and techniques.
- Ability to use computers and job-related software applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
Applicants must possess education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
- Two years of experience diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding and calibrating light and heavy-duty engines, power trains, stabilizing mechanisms, and related equipment requiring multiple integrated calibrations.
- Knowledge of operating diagnostic equipment used to inspect and test vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions in light and/or medium-duty vehicles, including pickup trucks, sedans, vans, buses and trucks.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubricating, cleaning, and servicing.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and decimals.
- Two years of experience in diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions on light and/or medium-duty vehicles such as pickup trucks, sedans, vans, buses or trucks.
- Two years of experience in performing routine engine tune-ups on light and/or medium- duty engines and system components, including replacing spark plugs, adjusting engine timing, servicing pollution control systems, and repairing fuel systems.
- Knowledge of minor body repair techniques.
