Job SummaryThe Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position provides on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks
. The role involves job site coordination
, dispatcher/train communication
, and managing various types of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas
.
- Jobsite Protection:
Ensure required jobsite protection on each assignment, radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits. - Daily Briefings:
Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure adherence to railroad safety requirements. - Documentation:
Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports. - Equipment Handling:
Manage and place signs, derails, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds as needed. - Safety Training:
Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training. - Communication:
Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules. - Additional Duties:
Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Ability to meet required physical demands; effectively warn roadway workers of approaching trains; understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualification requirements; proficiency in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs; ability to conduct job briefings with roadway workers; ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs; skill in installing railroad derails and locking devices; proficiency with electronic communications and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). - Education & Experience
- Required:
High school diploma or GED; minimum of 2 years in track and/or construction. - Education & Experience - Preferred: 2–5 years of track and/or construction experience; prior experience with a railway company; training in railway Track Inspection Guidelines or equivalent.
- Certifications:
CSX - FCI On-Track Worker and Operating Rules.
