A well-established, U.S.
-based manufacturing organization within the heating and thermal systems industry is seeking a Senior Sustaining/ Product Engineer to support and continuously improve its existing product portfolio. This role will focus on gas combustion-based heating systems, with responsibility for product reliability, performance optimization, cost improvement, and ongoing compliance with industry standards.
This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys owning products throughout their lifecycle, solving complex field and production issues, and working closely with cross-functional teams to implement meaningful, real-world improvements.
Key Responsibilities- Provide technical leadership for sustaining engineering activities supporting gas combustion heating systems
- Serve as the technical owner for existing products, ensuring long-term reliability, safety, and performance
- Investigate and resolve complex field, production, and quality issues through structured root cause analysis
- Lead and implement engineering changes (ECR/ECO) in collaboration with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on performance optimization, cost reduction, and manufacturability
- Ensure products remain compliant with applicable industry codes, standards, and certification requirements (e.g., UL, CSA, ANSI)
- Support corrective action efforts related to field failures, warranty issues, and production nonconformances
- Mentor and support junior engineers while contributing to technical knowledge sharing across the organization
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (Master’s preferred)
- 3+ years of engineering experience in mechanical or electromechanical product environments
- 3+ years of direct experience with gas combustion systems (design, troubleshooting, or sustaining support)
- Proven experience in a sustaining, product, or lifecycle engineering role supporting products in active production
- Strong working knowledge of applicable safety, regulatory, and certification standards
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while working cross-functionally
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills
- Experience supporting boilers, water heaters, HVAC, or similar thermal systems
- Familiarity with certification processes and interactions with testing agencies
- Knowledge of heat pump, refrigeration, or hybrid thermal systems
- Experience with control systems or PLCs in a product environment
