Building Automation Systems Engineer
Building Automation Systems Engineer (BAS Engineer) applies advanced knowledge and skills to engineer, design, program, analyze, troubleshoot, optimize, document, and improve campus building automation systems. The role focuses on HVAC system controls and associated systems such as lighting, laboratory air control, air‑quality monitoring, AV, window controls, and fault‑detection diagnostics (FDD). In the Energy Management and Integrated Automation teams, the engineer designs upgrades and renovations that maximize HVAC energy efficiency, stability, and reliability while meeting campus environmental requirements.

- Develop and program complex sequences of operation for HVAC and building controls.
- Commission and recommission HVAC system controls and other automated building systems.
- Assist Energy Management Program with programming, reverse‑engineering, reviewing plans, investigating new technologies, troubleshooting efficiency issues, and supporting measurement and verification efforts.
- Design HVAC controls systems for BAS upgrade and renewal projects, providing guidance and documentation.
- Specify and procure materials and equipment, and provide budget estimates for controls upgrades and installations.
- Produce As‑Built documentation and coordinate storage/archiving with the BAS shop.
- Track project timelines for completion and resolve obstacles while maintaining quality and customer satisfaction.
- Provide input to project managers and engineers to define project tasks, schedules, and budgets.
- Provide engineering oversight for BAS on new construction, renovation, and upgrade projects, including shop drawing review, field inspections, and commissioning.
- Participate in meetings with integrated automation, engineering, and BAS shop teams.
- Maintain and update campus design and construction guidelines related to BAS.
- Support integration of BACnet, Lon, Modbus, and other building control and energy management systems.
- Assist in troubleshooting and repairs of a wide range of automation systems and devices.
- Provide guidance to BAS technicians and contractors on diagnostics, repairs, installs, and programming modifications.
- Coordinate with the BAS shop to maintain records of system installations, configurations, and repairs in spreadsheets, databases, and documents.
- Use sensors, instrumentation, monitoring systems, and diagnostic tools to analyze and troubleshoot malfunctions.
- Create major modifications to BAS graphics and support minor graphic changes.
- Track and document changes made by vendors and staff.
- Plan and manage parts procurement and shop collaboration for assignments.
- Communicate progress and changes to all stakeholders.
- Associate’s degree plus 5+ years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six or more years of experience with Building Automation Systems and controls, with a proven record of complex projects.
- Valid driver’s license and compliance with Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
- High proficiency with Honeywell, Niagara, Johnson Controls Metasys, and other BAS platforms, and knowledge of their protocols and networks.
- Deep knowledge of hydronic, steam, chilled water, air handling units, and terminal units.
- Strong programming skills in BAS systems.
- Solid knowledge of energy management and efficiency techniques for HVAC systems.
- Ability to translate complex HVAC sequences into BAS programming logic.
- Experience with BACnet, Lon, Modbus controller configuration.
- Expert knowledge of BAS architecture and terminology.
- Reading and interpreting mechanical, electrical, and control design drawings and schematics.
- Proficiency in drafting controls drawings using CAD or Bluebeam.
- Experience with equipment testing and calibration (manometers, sensors, thermistor, humidity, CO₂, thermography).
- Experience with Skyspark FDD software and other fault detection diagnostics.
- Ability to work independently, exercise judgment, and communicate with engineering teams, trades shops, and technology services.
