Job Summary

Serves as Executive Director, Philanthropy reporting to the President and COO and the Foundation Board to support the organization's strategic and fundraising goals.

Strategic & Operational Duties
  • Develop and implement Foundation Strategic Plan.
  • Achieve annual fundraising goal.
  • Meet industry standards for cost per dollar raised.
  • Work with President/COO and Foundation Board to create a high performing fundraising organization.
  • Develop strong working relationships with the Foundation Board.
  • Present a recommendation for an annual budget for Wentworth-Douglass Hospital & Health Foundation.
  • Oversees the operations of charitable fundraising functions and events.

Oversees all administrative, financial and reporting activities of the Foundation.

Fund Development Strategy & Implementation
  • Creates annual and long‑term fund development strategies in the areas of major and planned gifts, grant writing, annual giving, remembrance giving, special events, donor stewardship/recognition and special campaign initiatives.

Creates and implements strategies to engage directors, staff and other key constituencies in the activities of the Foundation.

Philanthropic Culture & Vendor Engagement
  • Maintains high visibility within WDH. Works closely with the President/COO and members of the WDH Executive Team to build a philanthropic culture at WDH.
  • Establishes annual and long‑term fund development priorities and effectively plans and implements fund development strategies.
  • Coordinates fund development operations with other departments within WDH, such as finance and community relations.
Major Gift Officer Responsibilities
  • Serves as the lead staff in soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Recruits, organizes, trains and directs volunteers, advising them on effective major gift fundraising methods individually or in groups as appropriate.
  • Serves as the primary WDH contact for individuals, corporations, foundations and various community groups as they relate to fund development activities.
Culture of Philanthropy
  • Active vendor engagement and development for signature event sponsor ships.
  • Building organizational support for above average participation in the Employee Annual Fund.
  • Building and supporting an active and robust grateful patient program.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree Business Administration required
  • Bachelor's Degree Business Development required
  • Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required
  • Master's Degree Related Field of Study preferred
Experience
  • Experience in fundraising, development, or a related field 8-10+ years required
  • Experience in a management or leadership role 5-7 years required
  • Experience with in a healthcare environment 3-5 years preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Proven ability to develop and execute successful fundraising strategies and campaigns.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship‑building skills to engage donors, leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to articulate the hospital’s mission and priorities effectively.
  • Ability to analyze data and fundraising metrics to inform decision‑making and strategy development.
  • Leadership and team management skills to inspire and support a high‑performing development team.
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices, donor stewardship principles, and ethical fundraising standards.
