GEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN III (Position #21230)

Full‑time; hourly rate $17.81 - $23.39

Job Summary

Perform advanced technical and supervisory work in mobilizing, operating, maintaining, and repairing drilling equipment to obtain subsurface data required for the design and construction of NHDOT projects.

Responsibilities
  • Operate geological exploration equipment, including split‑spoon soil sampling, drilling with various size core bits and casings, field vane shear tests, installation of slope inclinometers and piezometers, and undisturbed sampling of soft or cohesive soils.
  • Oversee labeling, transport, and delivery of all rock cores and soil boxes.
  • Directly supervise a one– or two‑person crew, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Train new personnel in the safe operation of drilling equipment and procedures, continually monitoring operations to limit hazards.
  • Determine methods for moving and securing equipment under adverse conditions such as hills, swamps, wetland areas, and roadways, and operate a chainsaw to provide access for drill rigs.
  • Supervise field repairs and routine maintenance of equipment, including drill rigs, trucks, and water pumps.
  • Supervise setup and enforcement of work zone traffic controls for explorations performed in or adjacent to roadways, following standard policies and procedures.
  • Maintain daily work summary reports, vehicle cost reports, timesheets, and expense sheets for proper project cost accounting; prepare complete and accurate field logs of each exploration.
  • Maintain an inventory of drilling tools and supplies assigned to the crew; determine the need for specialized tools to complete specific assignments.
  • Work from a hotel or similar lodging when the project is too far to commute from Concord.
  • Perform all work in full conformance with risk management, safety, and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equivalent combination of 2 years of education and experience after high school in geology, science‑related technology, or a related field.
  • Experience in operating light or heavy motor‑driven equipment, excavation, and earth‑drilling equipment.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes.
  • Motor Vehicle Record meeting Department of Transportation minimum standards.
  • Negative result on pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with federal regulations and U.S. DOT requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to work out of a hotel or similar lodging when required.
  • Ability to lift or carry material weighing up to 50 lbs on an intermittent basis.
  • Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of subsurface rock and soil strata properties, and of combined auger‑core boring equipment and drilling apparatus operation.

This position offers a competitive hourly rate and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, retirement, and life insurance. The State of New Hampshire’s share of employee retirement is 12.87% of pay.
