Responsibilities

Howmet Aerospace operates in the aero engine and industrial gas turbine markets, and the Dover plant specializes in complex investment‑cast turbine airfoils and vacuum alloy manufacturing. The Melter Technician will be responsible for charging, operating, maintaining, and cleaning melting equipment in accordance with documented procedures and daily operation of the vacuum furnaces.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in the implementation of Howmet Aerospace’s EHS values and policies.
  • Comply with all department, facility, corporate, and regulatory EHS regulations.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Report all job‑related illness and injuries.
  • Report all safety, health & environmental concerns to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Attend all EHS training.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Monitor equipment operation and perform adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Keep the work environment clean and orderly.
  • Perform minor and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Install, remove, and operate preheat torches.
  • Follow all melting techniques (Al’s, melt practices).
  • Weigh metal additions (if qualified) and verify preliminary additions.
  • Enter data into melt card/logs.
  • Assume responsibility for multiple furnaces during a workday when required.
  • Perform coil changes, including confined space work, LTV, and handling the overhead crane.
  • Execute emergency and remedial procedures that arise during the melting process.
  • Spout and manage entry changes.
  • Run the tube cleaner and maintain area cleanliness.
  • Hot‑top mold clean‑ups as required.
  • Assist in training new team members.
  • After training, operate the “A”, “B”, “C”, and W units independently.
  • Complete Melter’s training and certification within the prescribed timeframe.
MELTER RESPONSIBILITIES DURING FURNACE CHANGES
  • Coordinate shift‑to‑shift communication during furnace changes.
  • Record progression of furnace changes on the sheet and report problems to shift team leader.
  • Pass status updates to the next shift.
  • Complete furnace change safety audits (confined space, fall protection, respirator inspections).
  • Ensure timely completion of furnace changes.
  • Maintain furnace‑change supplies in the assigned cabinet immediately after use.
  • Order out‑of‑stock supplies if necessary.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS Other Skills/Abilities
  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written) in English.
  • Complete Melter’s training and certification within the prescribed timeframe.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / EQUIPMENT USED
  • Pass satisfactory vision exam (Jaeger J1, 12 inches minimum).
  • Operate respirator and mobile equipment, including overhead cranes.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and hot environment work.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Use large and small tools, forklift/handcart, saws, cranes, and measurement equipment.
  • Wear personal protective equipment: safety glasses, shoes, hardhat, hearing protection, and appropriate clothing.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Interpret complex written instructions.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Operate a PC at a basic level.
Qualifications BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to access export‑controlled items lawfully.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States (visa sponsorship not available).
  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Residence within 50 miles of Dover, NJ (relocation benefit not offered).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends with little advanced notice.
  • Troubleshooting equipment ability.
