Overview
Universal Technical Resource Services, Inc. (UTRS) is seeking a CNC Operator to join our team. We provide a collaborative environment with a wide range of engineering, management, and digital services to public and private sectors. This position is responsible for CNC operations (Lathe or Mill) and is located at Picatinny Arsenal.
Responsibilities- Perform CNC operations on Lathe or Mill equipment.
- Interpret blueprints, process sheets, and setup documents to prepare the machine, including mounting work holding devices (chucks, jaws, collets for lathes; vises and fixtures for mills).
- Select and load the correct cutting tools (inserts, drills, end mills, boring bars) into the turret or carousel; set tool height, length, and diameter offsets.
- Find and set the part home/origin (X, Y, Z) using edge finders, indicators, or machine probes.
- Complete in-process inspections in open setup (micrometers, calipers, thread measurements) and optical comparator (angles and overlays).
- Run dry runs (air cuts) or single-block executions on new setups to prevent machine crashes or tool interference.
- Make minor edits to G-code/M-code at the controller to optimize the machining process (e.g., adjusting feed rates, speeds, or depth of cut).
- Monitor tool wear and apply wear offset adjustments to keep parts within blueprint tolerances as tools wear.
- Read and interpret complex geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) symbols.
- Use precision measuring tools (micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, thread plug gauges, shadow graphs) to inspect parts during production runs.
- Machining the first part of a batch to achieve quality before switching to full production.
- Identify root causes of machining issues such as poor surface finish, chatter, dimensional drift, or premature tool chipping.
- Perform daily preventive maintenance on the machine (checking oil levels, monitoring coolant concentration, cleaning chips).
- Enter inspection data and use basic computer tools (JobBOSS, etc.).
- Collaborate with Engineers and Technicians to complete tasks efficiently.
- Must be able to obtain a clearance through the DoD security background investigation process.
- Experience:
4–8 years operating CNC machinery. - Independently capable; work experience may vary if the applicant is proficient.
- Pass drug and alcohol testing.
- Good mechanical skills and experience; high standard of quality and efficiency.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Any other manufacturing experience is beneficial.
- Solid knowledge of shop mathematics.
- Team player; able to multitask and prioritize.
- Basic PC knowledge (MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Must be able to work in a physical capacity, lifting and moving heavy objects.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a government driver’s license.
- High School diploma required; college degree not required but beneficial.
