Director of 3PL Operations & Business Development
Full‑time position based in Essex, New Jersey (NJ 07801). The company is a family‑owned transportation and logistics company located in Northern New Jersey, established in 2008.
OverviewWe are expanding into warehouse, distribution, and 3PL services and seek a senior leader to launch, manage, and grow a new warehouse and 3PL division from the ground up. The role requires deep 3PL and warehouse operations expertise, strong leadership, and a business‑development mindset.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the launch, set up, and daily operation of the warehouse / 3PL division.
- Develop warehouse processes, SOPs, workflows, and operational standards.
- Manage receiving, shipping, inventory control, storage, fulfillment, cross‑dock, dock operations, and customer orders.
- Implement and manage WMS systems, reporting tools, and operational dashboards.
- Track and improve warehouse KPIs, including inventory accuracy, dock‑to‑stock time, labor productivity, pick rates, order accuracy, safety, and customer service.
- Hire, train, schedule, and manage warehouse supervisors, leads, and associates as the operation grows.
- Manage labor planning, staffing, productivity, costs, and operational profitability.
- Work with ownership on warehouse pricing, storage rates, handling fees, accessorial billing, customer agreements, and service proposals.
- Identify, pursue, and onboard new warehouse and 3PL customers.
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships with warehouse and logistics clients.
- Support business development by creating warehouse solutions for current and future customers.
- Collaborate with the trucking operation to deliver integrated transportation, warehouse, and distribution solutions.
- Manage inventory accuracy, cycle counts, customer reporting, claims, service issues, and process improvements.
- Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and compliant warehouse operation.
- Build the organizational structure for long‑term growth of the warehouse division.
- 10+ years of experience in warehouse, distribution, logistics, fulfillment, or 3PL operations.
- Strong 3PL experience preferred; experience starting, scaling, or improving a warehouse / 3PL operation is a major plus.
- Strong WMS experience required; preference for multi‑customer or multi‑client warehouse operations.
- Experience with warehouse pricing, storage billing, handling fees, accessorials, labor costing, and operational profitability.
- Experience with customer onboarding, client relationships, and warehouse service proposals.
- Experience managing KPIs, P&L, labor costs, productivity, inventory accuracy, and customer service performance.
- Experience leading warehouse teams, supervisors, leads, and operational staff.
- Strong understanding of receiving, shipping, inventory, fulfillment, cross‑dock, dock operations, storage, and distribution.
- Ability to work directly with ownership and help build a new business division.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Transportation or trucking experience is a plus, but warehouse and 3PL experience are the priority.
The ideal candidate has a proven record of building, managing, or scaling a warehouse, distribution center, fulfillment center, or 3PL operation. Experience with companies such as DHL, GXO, XPO, Ryder, Penske, Kuehne+Nagel, Geodis, NFI, Maersk, Saddle Creek, Kenco, CJ Logistics, Fed Ex Supply Chain, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, CEVA, DSV, Stord, Ship Bob, or similar logistics and 3PL firms is highly valued.
A strong 3PL background and functional knowledge of operations, customers, pricing, labor, systems, and profitability are essential.
Base salary: $150,000–$190,000 per year, based on experience.
Performance‑based bonus: 15%–30%.
Total compensation potential: $175,000–$250,000+ for the right candidate.
ScheduleFull‑time leadership role. Availability may be required based on operational needs. Direct collaboration with ownership will shape schedules and operational priorities.
