DescriptionThe Assistant Professor
- Preclinical faculty must have earned a DDS/DMD degree or equivalent. A minimum of 3 years of experience in general dentistry. The completion of a post-doctoral General Dentist Residency or training preferred. It is preferred that the candidate has a minimal level of teaching experience at an academic institution and/or health center. The candidate should have clinical experience in the use of CAD/CAM, laser, and emerging technologies in dentistry.
The candidate should be a person committed to educating and empowering students with a wide range of clinical and academic abilities.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education, the Assistant Professor Preclinical faculty will:
- Work directly with students in the simulation clinic and on scheduled times at the clinic, supervising the development of hand skills in all areas of general dentistry.
- Interact positively with students, treating all students as future colleagues.
- Be competent in instructing students and demonstrating procedures on the manikins in Sim and on student patients in the clinic at scheduled times in all areas of general dentistry.
- Be a positive role model for students in professionalism.
- Adhere to CDMI protocols, guidelines, calibrations, and policies in the delivery of dental care in the CDMI Dental Institute.
- Have clinical experience in the use of current technologies including rotary endodontics, CAD/CAM, and lasers.
- Be willing to learn new and emerging technologies in dentistry including rotary endodontics, CAD/CAM dentistry, 3D Printing, and lasers following CDMI clinical protocols and calibrations.
- Proactively engage and mentor pre-doctoral students in all areas of dentistry, including the active use of evidence-based technologies.
- Be an example of an active life-long learner in dentistry, through learning new techniques, materials and treatment protocols as needed by the college.
- Adopt different teaching techniques and styles to meet the needs of individual students.
- Serve on assigned committees within the college and/or university.
- Interact professionally with all faculty and staff, treating all faculty and staff with respect and collegiality.
- Develop and deliver teaching materials in analog and digital formats including Power Points and video instructions to the students in lecture and demonstrate in SIM clinic demo-along formats in all disciplines of general dentistry as requested by the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education following CDMI protocols, guidelines, calibrations, and policies for lecture delivery.
- Create teaching instruction and facilitate student rotation groups in all phases and specialties in dentistry.
- Take courses in education as needed, which should include skills for delivering lectures, as well as skills in developing examinations/assessments.
- Be competent in the use of the college’s patient digital record keeping system, being able to demonstrate in the simulation clinic use of the Electronic Health Record.
- Be a course director or co-director as assigned by the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education.
- Evaluate students in a timely manner (daily, quarterly, or weekly) as required by the college.
- Demonstrate collaborative relationships with dental specialists to model exemplary patient- centered care for students.
- Be a positive influence on the MWU CDMI program.
- Be willing to mentor students in small groups as requested by the college.
