Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Emergency Services Leadership Team to ensure departmental practices and outcomes are compliant with IDPH, DNV, EMSC, and other licensing/accrediting bodies and agencies.
  • Participates in continuous development and implementation of unit‑based quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the Emergency Department Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Encourages and facilitates staff participation in Unit Based Shared Governance to foster optimal nursing clinical quality and performance improvement.
  • Collaborates with the ED Nurse Manager, Medical Director, and ED Clinical Nurse Specialist to evaluate quality and appropriateness of care delivered.
  • Contributes to development and implementation of action plans, collects and analyzes data, and makes adjustments to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensures all associates are compliant with established care delivery and practices.
  • Promotes evidence‑based practice by utilizing clinical guidelines and procedures from the literature.
  • Fosters and facilitates a climate conducive to educational experiences for associates; encourages staff to pursue formal education, certification, and professional development.
  • Participates in development and implementation of annual competency education with the Emergency Services Leadership Team.
  • Provides formal and informal education to staff in conjunction with accrediting requirements based on clinical staff needs to enhance nursing knowledge and practice.
  • Autonomously monitors individual performance of staff regarding quality initiatives and Behaviors of Excellence for annual performance evaluations.
  • Participates in interviewing, hiring, and competency assessment of staff with the ED Nurse Manager and ED Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Serves as a role model in providing optimal patient experiences, demonstrating supportive communication styles and techniques based on individual patient and family needs, and utilizing positive behaviors/interventions to address concerns.
  • Performs rounding on patients using key questions to assess experience, leads staff regarding patient engagement and loyalty, and monitors associate performance of patient engagement.
  • Provides first‑line service recovery of patient, family, and physician complaints and follows through with ED Nurse Manager.
  • Communicates unresolved issues to ED Nurse Manager and other unit managers and leadership team members as appropriate.
  • Reviews patient satisfaction scores and feedback to assist the ED Nurse Manager and CNS in identifying trends and developing action plans focused on building loyal patient relationships and maintaining top decile ED Patient Satisfaction goals.
  • Collaborates with Manager and Charge Nurses on processes to improve patient satisfaction.
  • Actively rounds the physical ED environment to evaluate and support readiness for positive patient experiences, engaging and delegating to staff accordingly.
  • Provides direct supervision of associates and accepts accountability for services provided on the unit.
  • Provides feedback and coaching to associates to ensure optimal clinical and enterprise outcomes.
  • Consistently rounds on associates to role‑model the Behaviors of Excellence, monitors morale, follows up on organizational initiatives, and improves associate retention.
  • Follows established processes for addressing and resolving employee complaints and concerns.
  • Involves staff in short and long‑term unit planning.
  • Facilitates participation of staff in decision making and supports staff involvement in shared governance at unit and organizational level.
  • Conducts timely performance reviews of all staff.
  • Incorporates peer review in annual performance evaluations for all associates.
  • Participates in and develops associate orientation to the unit in collaboration with the ED Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Conducts routine check‑ins with new hires to ensure engagement and retention.
  • Provides timely and supportive feedback during orientation period and beyond.
