Summary
The Stationary Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining stationary engines and mechanical equipment such as steam engines, air compressors, motors, turbines, steam boilers, and chillers to provide utilities such as heat and cooling for buildings and industrial processes. The Stationary Engineer reports to the Lead Stationary Engineer. The hours for this position are Sunday-Thursday from 7 am-3:30 pm.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitors gauges, meters, and indicators to verify operating conditions of boilers, chillers, compressors, motors, condensate systems, and related equipment.
- Reads meters and gauges at specified intervals to verify conditions.
- Maintains records such as temperature, hours of operation, fuel consumption, pressure, water levels, and flue gas analysis.
- Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended operating ranges, switch to backup systems, or shut down equipment.
- Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
- Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components.
- Lubricates equipment with oil.
- Performs water titration tests and adds chemical additives, such as water softeners, to the treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and clean boiler lines.
- Overhauls, disassembles, and reassembles pumps such as feed, transfer, condensate, vacuum, chemical, and recirculating pumps.
- Performs yearly overhauls of fire‑tube boilers, including punching tubes, refractory repairs, and testing safety equipment.
- Troubleshoots and repairs electric and pneumatic boiler controls.
- Applies safety standards at all times and maintains good housekeeping practices.
- Records operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operators’ logbook.
- Operates and troubleshoots BAS systems and controls.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and ExperienceHigh School diploma or GED required. Must have a State of Illinois Stationary Engineer license. The EPA Universal Certification license is strongly desired. Must have 2 or more years of related experience with HVAC equipment. Must have a valid driver’s license.
Computer SkillsProficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel) is desired.
Language SkillsIntermediate:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and operating instructions, write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Intermediate:
Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
