LA County Library provides services to 3.4 million people over 3,000 square miles. It operates 86 libraries, 4 Cultural Resource Centers, and a mobile fleet consisting of 15 vehicles. This fleet includes 4 Bookmobiles, 6 Mak Mo's (maker mobiles), 3 Reading Machines (early literacy vehicles), and 2 mobile outreach vehicles.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide public service by responding to reference inquiries, providing reader's advisory services, and assisting customers in locating, evaluating, and using library resources and services, including directing customers to library materials and explaining library organizations and layout.
  • Coordinate library programs, including reading programs for youth; present book talks; and prepare supporting materials, such as bibliographies, resources guides, and special displays.
  • Support a variety of library service areas, including reference assistance, youth and adult services programming, and performs specialized assignments in support of departmental needs.
  • Maintain on-site collections, including print materials, audiovisual resources, and government publications.
  • Assists in promoting library programs, services, and activities by preparing and distributing announcements, supporting online communication platforms and digital content updates, and participating in outreach efforts, including conducting school and classroom visits.
  • Collaborate with committee members to develop and improve library programs, policies, procedures, and training initiatives.
  • Provide individual or group instruction to customers with digital printing, computer literacy, and technology use.
  • Maintain records and prepares periodic (e.g. monthly) reports on library activities and service delivery for monitoring and operational review.
  • Plan, assign, and oversee the work of adult and teen volunteers, including providing training and guidance to support community involvement in library activities.
  • Performs technical services functions, including classifying and cataloging library materials, creating metadata for digital collections, performing authority control, maintaining bibliographic records, and processing materials, as assigned.
  • Serve in a lead capacity during the supervisor's absence to ensure continuity of library operations, as needed.
Requirements

Possession of a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an accredited institution*

License

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Physical Class 3 – Moderate

This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
