Job Summary:

To provide professional nursing care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, to collaborate with the physician's medical plan, and to execute the objectives and the policies of the hospital. To provide standard of care services to childbearing women and their well babies.

Accountabilities
:

• 1. Assesses, plans, implements, documents, coordinates, and manages patient care according to department and hospital standards and considering age-specific accommodations.

• a. Utilizes the nursing process for all patients assigned to his/her care:

• Performs and documents ongoing assessment of patients according to department standards

• Recognizes and obeys EMTALA laws in the delivery of care to the pregnant women

• Continually reassesses patients for changes in their condition that may signal the onset of a pregnancy related problem

• b. Provides patient care, which demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of normal physiology and disease pathophysiology of the pregnant woman. Appropriate nursing and medical interventions and knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan.

• c. Documents patient response to treatment and effectiveness of care.

• d. Provides teaching and discharge planning based on assessment of self-care knowledge/ability on an ongoing basis.

• e. Insures appropriate completion of chart and other documentation including transcription of physician orders and computer entry.

• f. Insures that no unapproved abbreviations are used when documenting on patient’s medical record.

• g. Demonstrates appropriate skill in utilization of the computer for automated order entry, data retrieval, and medication administration, nursing care planning and intervention and interdepartmental communication as determined by defined access levels.

• h. Implements nursing/physician orders that result in achievement of patient, nursing, and physician goals. Evaluates, revises, and improves patient care using creative strategies, current research findings, and consideration of age-specific accommodations.

• i. Appropriately assigns all Associates under his/her supervision according to their skill level.

• j. Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in completion of assigned responsibilities in accordance with department needs.

• k. Performs selected therapeutic interventions and diagnostic procedures according to department standards as ordered to include but not limited to:

• PNTC Perinatal Nurse

• Specimen collection and preparation of specimens for mailing to outside labs.

• Assists Perinatologist with Amniocentesis and CVS studies.

• Prepares, organizes, and reviews charts for upcoming patients. This includes proactively gathering appropriate medical information, history and lab work, and fine-tuning previously scheduled appointments and noting studies that require the special attention of the Perinatologist or Obstetrician.

• Helps obstetrical groups to understand the processes necessary in obtaining the best antenatal study for their particular patients.

• Is aware of and attentive to the timing of various prenatal tests helping the registrars correctly schedule high-risk patients.

• Insures that the obstetrical groups have what they need to have patients be successful in timing their prenatal appointments including designing and obtaining workable forms.

• Orders needed supplies and forms in proper quantity for storage and use without running short.

• Offers support to patients receiving unexpected or unwanted news.
