Overview
Position Overview:
Hale Centre Theatre is seeking a skilled and dedicated Patterner/Draper to join our costume department for an exciting and dynamic theatrical season. The Patterner/Draper will collaborate closely with the Costume Designer, Assistant, Head of Costumes and Wardrobe, and Costume Shop Supervisor to bring the design visions to life. This role is vital in ensuring that all costume builds are completed to the highest standard, on time, and within the established production timeline.
- Collaborative Design Meetings:
Meet with the Costume Designer, Assistant Costume Designer, Head of Costumes and Wardrobe, and Costume Shop Supervisor after the preliminary design meeting and again after the final design presentation to discuss all build details for the show. - Production Timeline Adherence:
Follow the production timeline diligently, ensuring that all costume builds are delivered on time and meet the high standards of Hale Centre Theatre. - Determine Build
Hours:
Work closely with the team to help determine build hours for each item in the costume build process. - Pattern Drafting and Draping:
Draft and/or drape patterns for all intended build items, ensuring accurate execution of the design. Oversee the creation of any other patterns being needed or considered for the show. - Fabric and Notions Calculation:
Accurately calculate yardage for fabric and make detailed notes of all material requirements, including but not limited to fabric, trims, and notions necessary for each costume build. - Collaboration with Shop Build Supervisor:
Collaborate with the Shop Build Supervisor to ensure clear communication of all production needs, troubleshooting issues, and addressing any concerns that may arise during the build process. - Supervision and Instruction:
Instruct and supervise the First-Hand/Assistant Tailor in proper construction techniques and procedures for each build item, ensuring high-quality and accurate workmanship. - Cutting of Build Items:
Oversee or directly execute the cutting of all fabric and materials needed for the costume builds. - Fitting Supervision:
Attend or oversee fittings of build items, ensuring that costumes fit actors comfortably, accurately, and according to the design specifications. Take precise measurements and conduct fittings as needed. - Costume Construction and Alterations:
Pattern, sew, and alter garments using various techniques and materials. Pay meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the highest quality and accuracy of all built costumes. - Finishing of Build Items:
Supervise the finishing process for each costume build, ensuring all details are completed to the highest standard. - Maintain Quality Standards:
Help maintain the high standards of Hale Centre Theatre’s costume department, preserving the integrity of the design and contributing to the overall production’s success. - Pattern Organization:
Responsible for sorting, purging, and properly storing all patterns after each project is complete to ensure organization and readiness for future use. - Stay Current with Industry Trends:
Stay up-to-date on the latest trends, techniques, and innovations within the costume and fashion industry to continuously improve your skills and knowledge. - Additional Duties:
Perform any other related tasks or assignments given by the Head of Costume and Wardrobe to support the successful build and execution of the show. - Professional Demeanor:
Maintain a professional demeanor and foster a positive and collaborative work environment while working with the costume team and other departments.
- Proven experience as a Patterner/Draper or in a similar role within the costume or fashion industry.
- Strong knowledge of pattern drafting, draping, sewing, and costume construction techniques.
- Ability to interpret and execute complex costume designs with precision and attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to adhere to production timelines.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to give clear instructions and feedback.
- Experience with fittings and adjusting garments to ensure a perfect fit for actors.
- Strong understanding of fabric types, yardage calculation, and knowledge of garment notions and finishes.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and requirements throughout the production process.
- Positive, professional attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
