We're not hiring a teacher. We're hiring a Guide.
At Aim Academy, students run their own learning. No lectures, no worksheets from on high, no adult at the front pretending to be the smartest person in the room. Our middle and high school learners tackle real‑world quests, govern their own community, hold each other accountable, and wrestle with questions that don't have answers in the back of the book.
The Guide's job is different from anything a traditional ed program trains you for. You don't deliver content. You ask the question that cracks a problem open, then step back and let students do the hard, frustrating, exhilarating work of figuring it out. You hold the space. You protect the struggle. You resist — constantly — the urge to rescue.
What you'll do:- Launch and lead Socratic discussions where you talk less than your students do
- Build and run quests that connect learning to real work in the real world, culminating in public exhibitions
- Coach adolescents through productive failure without bailing them out
- Help a self‑governing community of teenagers actually govern themselves — covenants, accountability, the works
- Track each learner's growth and hand responsibility back to students as fast as they can carry it
- Hold high standards and warm relationships at once, compromising neither
You're drawn to the idea that school should form a person, not just inform them — and you want to be trained in a rigorous method for doing it.
Who thrives here:- You'd rather watch a student discover something than tell them the answer
- You're comfortable saying "I don't know — how could you find out?"
- You believe adolescents are capable of far more than school usually asks
- You're allergic to busywork and skeptical of gold stars
- Kind‑hearted and tough‑minded; a fellow traveler, not an authority over them
- If you measure a good day by how much you covered, this isn't your room
- If silence in a discussion makes you nervous enough to fill it, you'll struggle here
- If you need to be the hero of the classroom, our model will frustrate you daily
We'll teach you the methodology. We can't teach you the disposition.
Details:Full‑time, on‑site in Draper. Light onboarding through summer; full‑time begins August 6th. Compensation commensurate with experience, plus professional development and training in our character‑formation methodology.
