Animal Control Officer
The position works under the direction of the Animal Control Supervisor and is responsible for enforcing all city ordinances relating to small and large domestic animals. Meets with public and provides assistance relevant to animal control, animal health, and humane treatment.
Essential functions include responding to citizen complaints and enforcing all animal control ordinances, enforcing city ordinances regarding public health, safety, and zoning, monitoring bite cases and rabies cases for proper testing and compliance with laws, performing inspections and providing licensing, appearing in court to testify in support of the city's position regarding violations of city ordinance and applicable state codes, impounding animals to be held in custody, collaborating with city, state, and federal agencies, using a bike to patrol city trails, proper handling of wildlife, performing officer and clerical work including but not limited to computer data entry of case reports and licensing information, preparing and maintaining accurate reports documenting investigations, enforcement actions, animal impoundment, shelter activities, adoptions, releases, etc.,
maintaining files, database, and record related to investigations, animal control activities, shelter operations, and enforcement action, participating in on-call and after-hours calls involving animal control and shelter related emergencies, assuring humane care and conditions of impounded animals, assisting police officers with special events, euthanizing animals when necessary and ensuring proper disposal, performing shelter responsibilities including but not limited to facility and animal maintenance, promoting a high level of customer service and good public relations, and all other duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, 1 or more years working experience with animals, knowledge of animal husbandry or job-related experience is preferred, experience with computers and business-related general office practices, a current Euthanasia Certificate or becoming certified within 6 months of hire, and a valid Utah Driver's License.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of animal control procedures; small and large domestic animal care, knowledge and skill in handling potentially dangerous animals, including vicious or rabid animals, modern office practices and procedures; working knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, Microsoft Office Suite and proficiency in Word, and Excel, greeting customers, guests, and visitors consistently, exercising initiative in using time productively and without close supervision, handling confrontational situations and making sound decisions, providing customer service and answering customer or public inquiries or obtaining information from individuals, residents, etc.
for follow-up, working independently, efficiently navigating Draper City in order to identify and respond to specific locations, communicating effectively with the public under potentially adverse circumstances and working well with supervisors, co-workers, and employees in other departments, analyzing a situation and making sound recommendations and decisions in animal control procedures and city ordinances pertaining to animal control, following city policy, establishing priorities, concentrating on tasks accurately, and accomplishing duties in a timely manner, projecting a professional image when serving the public, responding with a high degree of accuracy and with a high level of courtesy and a strong public service orientation, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with both internal and external customers, and maintaining rabies immunizations.
Working conditions and physical demands include a typical office setting with comfortable climate controls, however regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
Occasionally lifts or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds. This position has exposure to stressful situations. Work is often performed under deadlines and time constraints. May drive a motor vehicle to travel throughout the City and to other locations. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty.
