Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) – Nelnet requires a senior leader to protect consumers and maintain a culture of compliance across all business units. The CCO works closely with executive management, board members, and regulatory agencies to ensure adherence to consumer protection laws and internal policies.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the bank’s compliance management program, setting vision, leadership, and direction.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of consumer protection laws, regulations, industry best practices, and congressional directives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local consumer protection statutes (e.g., Dodd-Frank, CFPB, Truth-In-Lending, Fair Credit Reporting, Fair Debt Collection Practices, etc.).
  • Develop and manage bank policies and procedures and oversee implementation across all business units.
  • Provide recurring compliance risk reports to executive management, management committees, and the Board Compliance and Risk Committee.
  • Design, deliver, and coordinate compliance training for all associates, board members, and management.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and state regulators during audits, investigations, and regulatory communications.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Risk Management, and Internal Audit to evaluate potential compliance issues and develop remediation plans.
  • Monitor customer feedback, complaints, and audit results to identify training and oversight needs.
  • Advise functional departments on regulatory requirements to support strategic and product development initiatives.
  • Prepare, monitor, and oversee the compliance budget, ensuring resources are allocated to meet regulatory obligations.
  • Escalate significant compliance concerns to appropriate levels of management.
Qualifications and Experience
  • 10+ years in business, risk management, regulatory relations, compliance, or project management within the financial services industry.
  • 10+ years of experience leading, developing, and managing professional teams.
  • Juris Doctor preferred;
    Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager preferred; additional regulatory certifications are a plus.
  • Proven expertise in interpreting, applying, and communicating consumer lending regulations, including Dodd-Frank, CFPB, Truth-In-Lending, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, E-Sign Act, and Electronic Funds Transfer Act.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, retain, and lead dynamic, independent teams.
  • High level of integrity, dedication, and reliability.
Education
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree required; preferred fields of study:
    Business, Political Science, or Law.

  • Annual salary range: 200,, commensurate with experience.

    Associates residing within 30 miles of an office may work remotely part of the week; in-office collaboration three days per week.
