Public Works Technician
Under general direction of the Public Works Operations Manager and assigned under direct supervision of the Public Works Office Manager, provides operational support and assistance to Public Works divisions including Solid Waste, Streets, Water, Storm Water, Fleet, and other assigned areas. Performs a variety of maintenance, customer service, inventory, and operational support duties.
Essential Functions:- Provides operational support and assistance to various Public Works divisions.
- Coordinates delivery, exchange, repair, tracking, and inventory of residential solid waste and recycling containers.
- Operates City vehicles, trailers, equipment, hand tools, and power tools necessary to complete assigned maintenance and operational tasks.
- Performs general maintenance activities, including minor repairs, cleanup, material handling, facility maintenance, and equipment preparation.
- Assists with inspections, maintenance, repairs, and operational needs associated with Public Works infrastructure, facilities, equipment, and assets.
- Utilizes technology, software applications, and mobile devices to receive, document, update, and complete work orders, service requests, inspections, inventory tracking, and other assigned activities.
- Responds to resident service requests and provides professional customer service.
- Assists with seasonal operations, emergency response activities, snow and ice control operations, and changing Public Works priorities as assigned.
- Assists with inventory control, material organization, supply management, and tracking of Public Works assets and resources.
- Maintains accurate records related to work activities, service requests, inventory, equipment usage, and assigned activities.
- Follows established safety procedures, City policies, and applicable regulations while performing assigned duties.
- Communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, residents, contractors, and other departments to coordinate work and provide quality service.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Experience – Public Services Technician – One year of experience in public works, maintenance, construction, customer service, equipment operation, inventory management, or a related field preferred.
- License and Certification – Public Services Technician – Valid Utah Driver License. Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver License with Tanker Endorsement within 12-months of hire. Following certifications required or obtained within 12 months of hire:
Flagger
- Knowledge of policies, procedures, equipment, and materials required for effective operations, maintenance, and repairs
- General safety practices and procedures required
- State of Utah Commercial Driver License rules and regulations
- Skilled with strong math, reading, and analytical skills
- Organizing and planning work assignments after instructions are given and complete a wide variety of maintenance activities
- Interpersonal relations in order to deal effectively with the public and other city employees
- Using computers, mobile devices, and software applications to enter information, maintain records, complete work orders, and track assigned tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
Position requires working outdoors. Tasks require a variety of physical activities. Regularly required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. May be confined to small spaces to perform work.
Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.)
