Job Description
The Sous Chef is a vital component of the culinary team, second-in-command in the kitchen hierarchy, responsible for managing daily operations and ensuring high-quality food presentation. They are the right-hand of the Head Chef, tasked with overseeing kitchen staff, ensuring food quality standards, and assisting in menu development. In this dynamic role, the Sous Chef manages a fast-paced environment, coordinating with other chefs, cooks, and kitchen staff to provide a seamless dining experience.
They’re key players in maintaining the kitchen’s health and safety standards, controlling food costs, and implementing all company policies effectively. Quick-thinking, creativity, leadership, and the ability to mobilize a team efficiently are essential for success in this role.
- Assist the Head Chef in planning and directing food preparation operations.
- Supervise and control all kitchen activities to ensure smooth operation.
- Manage kitchen staff, providing training, scheduling, and performance feedback.
- Ensure ingredients are prepared and garnished according to establishment’s standards.
- Coordinate and delegate tasks to kitchen staff during service periods.
- Monitor food stock to ensure sufficient quantities and timely reordering of supplies.
- Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment compliant with health regulations.
- Creatively develop and present unique menu items that attract customers.
- Collaborate with Head Chef on dish recipes and menu changes.
- Ensure timely preparation and serving of all menu items during operating hours.
- Oversee kitchen equipment maintenance, ensuring functionality and safety at all times.
- Support cost control efforts by minimizing waste and optimizing resource usage.
- Proven experience as a Sous Chef or similar role in a reputable establishment.
- Culinary degree or equivalent certification from a recognized culinary institution.
- Strong leadership skills with experience in team management and staff development.
- Exceptional cooking skills with a focus on taste, presentation, and quality.
- Deep understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, and equipment.
- Ability to remain calm and efficient in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks.
