Job SummaryThe Mechanic 1 is responsible for conducting routine maintenance and performing basic repairs on trailers, diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, and plant equipment. This role develops core competencies in fleet equipment maintenance under the supervision of Mechanic 2, 3, and Fleet Managers.
Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on all fleet vehicles and plant equipment, including wheel loaders, skid steers, man lifts, scissor lifts, backhoes, lawnmowers, and farm tractors.
- Review driver vehicle inspection reports and repair inspections per directions of Mechanic 3 and/or the Fleet Manager.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks.
- Inspect and replace basic components (belts, hoses, batteries, lights).
- Assist in diagnosing mechanical issues using basic diagnostic tools.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and work areas.
- Document work performed and parts used through maintenance logs or fleet management systems.
- Support Mechanic 2 and 3 with more complex repairs and diagnostics under their supervision.
- Respond to roadside service calls for disabled vehicles when required.
- Adhere to all company safety rules and regulations and attend safety meetings.
- Participate in ongoing training and certification programs (travel as needed).
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
- Valid driver's license.
- At least 1 year of experience in vehicle maintenance or a related technical field.
- Personal basic tool set to perform preventive maintenance.
- Basic understanding of diesel and gasoline engine operation and components.
- Experience with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Basic computer proficiency and use of fleet software.
- Detail‑oriented and highly organized.
- Class A CDL (preferred, may be required).
- Brake certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
- Vocational training (preferred).
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Self‑starter; self‑motivated.
- Exposed to high noise levels, strong odors, and/or heat and cold.
- Exposed to biohazardous conditions.
- Exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals requiring safety measures.
- Exposed to electrical hazards with risk of shock.
- Handles or works with potentially dangerous equipment.
- Travels to off‑site locations.
- Frequently walks, climbs ladders, and progresses through areas requiring stooping or kneeling.
- Ability to operate a computer and other office machinery.
- Possibly lifts up to 25 pounds frequently; 50 pounds less often.
