Position Summary

The Middle School Band Director/Music Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality music instruction and leading a comprehensive band program that supports student growth, performance excellence, and school/community engagement. This position includes teaching music courses during the school day and directing all aspects of the high school band program, including performances, competitions, and extracurricular activities.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Duties
  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in music courses aligned to state curriculum standards.
  • Teach band and/or other assigned music classes (e.g., music appreciation, theory, or general music).
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs and abilities.
  • Assess student progress regularly and provide timely, specific feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and performance data.
Band Program Leadership
  • Direct and manage all aspects of the high school band program, including concert band, marching band, and other ensembles as assigned.
  • Develop and implement a year-round program of rehearsals, performances, and competitions.
  • Coordinate and lead band camps, after-school rehearsals, and sectional practices.
  • Prepare students for performances at school events, athletic games, concerts, festivals, and community functions.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, discipline, teamwork, and pride within the band program.
Program Management
  • Oversee inventory, maintenance, and organization of instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
  • Develop and manage the band budget in coordination with school administration.
  • Coordinate transportation, scheduling, and logistics for events and trips.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and procedures, including safety protocols.
Student Development & Support
  • Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging personal and musical growth.
  • Support student leadership development within the band program.
  • Maintain high expectations for student behavior and performance.
Communication & Community Engagement
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administration.
  • Collaborate with other faculty and staff to support school initiatives and student success.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with parents, booster organizations, and the community.
  • Promote the band program through performances, outreach, and recruitment efforts.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning, and school activities.
  • Stay current with best practices in music education and performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field.
  • Valid Georgia teaching certification (or eligibility) in Music (P-12).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music instruction and band program management.
Preferred
  • Experience directing a high school band program, including marching band.
  • Experience with competition preparation and adjudicated performances.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to lead large student groups in both instructional and performance settings.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize complex schedules and events.
  • Commitment to student achievement and program excellence.
Work Conditions
  • Extended hours required, including evenings, weekends, and summer band activities.
  • Travel required for performances and competitions.
Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the district's teacher evaluation system and applicable state guidelines.
