Provides and directs safe, effective and culturally competent care for high risk, critically acute patients with actual or potential life‑threatening conditions. Through evidence‑based practice, utilizes critical thinking to assess, plan, implement and evaluate outcome‑based care of patients. Provides care to critically ill patients including cardiovascular and surgical patients. May assume responsibilities and accountability for assigned ECMO patients. Supervises and coordinates care provided to patients by the LPN, Patient Care Assistants and other nursing team members.
Facilitates communication with physicians, patients and families, other departments and/or team members. Adheres to Mercy One's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Mercy One.
- Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
- Conducts an initial assessment to gather data.
- Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal‑based plan of care.
- Implements the outcome/goal‑based plan of care.
- Evaluates patient progress and revises the outcome/goal‑based plan as needed.
- Communicates relevant clinical information to the team to optimize patient outcomes/goals.
- Demonstrates clinical competence.
- Provides care appropriate to the age‑related needs of the patients served on the assigned unit.
- Collects, analyzes, interprets and applies age‑specific data.
- Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.
- Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
- Associate degree required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Critical Care nursing experience preferred.
- Current Iowa RN license or active compact RN license recognized by the state of Iowa.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities within 12 months of hire.
- Trama Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 3 months of hire.
- Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Training (NVCI) within 6 months of hire.
- High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Must possess a personal presence characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring, with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health and Mercy One.
