Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

• Work/life balance with flexible schedule – 7 shifts per month, 86 shifts annually

The selected Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will provide assessment, evaluation, and treatment of neonates under the supervision of pediatricians.

Additional Job Functions include:

• Function as the mid‑level provider for newborn patients by:
  • Assessing, planning, and evaluating medical care under the direction of the attending pediatrician
  • Reporting accurately and concisely to the attending pediatrician and in problem‑oriented documentation
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory data and plain X‑ray film as appropriate
  • Writing appropriate orders for medications, IV therapy, parental nutrition, blood products, and for admissions, transfers, and discharges
  • Attending high‑risk deliveries, resuscitating, and stabilizing patients
  • Stabilizing babies for transport to another hospital system that requires a higher level of care
• Attending and providing newborn care, resuscitation, and stabilization for all deliveries as required
• Providing consultation to administrative, nursing, and medical staff
• Participating in the ongoing competency assessment program for maintenance of advanced neonatal knowledge and skills of nursing staff
• Participating in nursing education and ongoing competency assessment
• Initiating and pursuing self‑development activities through readings, lectures, and formal educational programs
• Participating as appropriate in quality improvement and the formulation, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures in the Birth Center

• Successful completion of an accredited NNP program
• Unrestricted State of Iowa License
• Experience in a NICU for a minimum of two years
• Comfortable working independently as only one NNP will be scheduled per shift – covering level II NICU, nursery rounds, attending deliveries, and performing circumcisions
• BLS, ACLS, PALS certification
• NRP certification
• Clinical knowledge, current clinical competences, and analytical abilities necessary to formulate nursing and medical interventions
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, other health‑care personnel, and visitors
