Overview
State of Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is seeking an Auditor for its Office of Insurance Licensing, Investigations, and Audits. The role supports Michigan’s insurance sector by monitoring and analyzing agency and premium finance company practices to identify concerns, assess risks, and assist in resolving deficiencies, with audits guiding enforcement decisions and promoting transparency.
Responsibilities- Monitor and analyze the business practices of insurance agencies and premium finance companies.
- Identify potential or existing areas of concern and determine causes of deficiencies.
- Assist in resolving issues and determine whether enforcement action is warranted.
- Prepare audit reports to promote transparency and provide guidance to stakeholders.
- Communicate findings clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Collaborate with colleagues and senior leaders to solve problems.
- Travel occasionally, including overnight travel if required.
- Strong professional judgement and decision‑making skills in a dynamic, collaborative, high‑tech environment.
- Curious and analytical mind capable of analyzing financial performance, identifying and assessing risks, developing solutions, and supporting conclusions.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight travel.
- Knowledge and experience related to title, property, and casualty insurance.
Education
Possession of a bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in accounting.
Experience
- Auditor 9 – No specific type or amount required.
- Auditor 10 – One year of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor 9.
- Auditor P11 – Two years of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor, including one year equivalent to an Auditor 10.
Alternate Education and Experience
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester credits in finance, economics, information systems, business analytics, data analytics, statistics, quantitative methods, data science, or management may substitute for education for agency positions responsible for internal auditing or Office of Auditor General positions responsible for auditing.
- Possession of a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) may substitute for one year of experience at the P11 level for positions responsible for internal auditing.
- Possession of a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) may substitute for six months of experience at the P11 level.
- Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may substitute for one year of Auditor experience.
