Overview

The Clerk’s Office of the U.S. District Court is looking for candidates to join our team as a Court Operations Clerk. The incumbent provides clerical and administrative support to the court.

Responsibilities
  • Perform administrative and customer service work, ensuring efficient and fair operations related to the selection, qualifications, summoning, orientation, management, and payment of jurors for petit and/or grand juries and making determinations as to juror attendance.
  • Provide procedural information and forms to pro‑se litigants initiating a case in the Court and respond to questions from Chambers and Clerk’s Office staff regarding court practices for pro‑se litigants.
  • Scan, convert, and make summary entries of documents and proceedings on the electronic case‑management system (pleadings, petitions, motions, complaints, orders, etc.).
  • Ensure all automated entries are accurately filed, recorded, and appropriately linked for proper case management.
  • Prepare and inform parties about notices, judgments, and orders; forward documents such as motions to the attention of chambers staff.
  • Furnish information to the public, attorneys and litigants in person, by telephone, or written correspondence regarding the status of cases before the Court.
  • Receive and examine documents submitted for filing with the court in pending actions and open new actions.
  • Issue all forms of process in civil and criminal cases including summonses, subpoenas, and writs.
  • Perform accounting functions for monies paid to the court including fees, fines, and court costs.
  • Provide clerical and administrative support to judges, including em paneling juries, administering oaths to witnesses, conferring with attorneys, preparing reports on case status, coordinating court appearances, arranging counsel pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act, calling the court calendar, and taking calendar minutes.
  • Provide support for court naturalization ceremonies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution (qualifies for CL 23/1).
  • Two years of general clerical or office experience (or a bachelor’s degree). CL 24 requires one year of progressively responsible clerical work with routine use of keyboard skills and specialized terminology, and demonstrated ability to apply rules, regulations, directives, or laws typical of court settings.
  • Excellent written, organizational, and technical skills with a minimum data entry speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, courtesy in dealing with the public, and a positive attitude with excellent customer service.
  • Well organized, attentive to detail, able to work independently, and show initiative in starting, prioritizing, and completing tasks.
Preferred Skills
  • College degree.
  • Experience in a courthouse, law firm, social service organization, insurance office, or educational institution.
