Internship Exploring General Business & Beyond

Angela Listens is a storytelling project that explores friendship, vulnerability and connection through creating short documentaries from everyday people’s lives. Angela believes being a human would be more of a 10/10 experience if we were more real with each other, and enjoys finding whimsical ways to do so.

Personality of my ideal candidate include:

  • Friendly, creative, a natural storyteller, curious about people’s lives, comfortable w/ approaching strangers, comfortable working in new, ambiguous environments, and would like to have a loooot of creative direction in the project, as it’s just starting out. If you even have a few of these qualities, I’d encourage you to apply.

Skillset of my ideal candidate include:

  • Comfortable w/ a video editing software like Cap Cut or Premiere

The internship emphasizes experiential learning through progressively increasing creative responsibility. I will work with the intern together to determine # of hours that are sustainable w/ existing coursework and responsibilities… I would like to have at least 5 hours per week, w/ up to 20 hours. I am also actively looking for funding & support for the project, and paying my intern will be the first thing that money goes towards.

Depending on their interests, interns will have opportunities to develop skills in:

  • Documentary story development and narrative structure
  • Conducting thoughtful, empathetic interviews with strangers
  • Camera operation, composition, and visual storytelling
  • Audio recording and production fundamentals
  • Innovative visual storytelling elements & animations to bring a story to life
  • Editing in Premiere Pro or Cap Cut, including pacing, rhythm, and emotional storytelling
  • Developing short-form content for broad audiences while maintaining strong narrative quality
  • Creative collaboration, constructive critique, and iterative revision

Interns will build their skills through a combination of observation, guided practice, independent creative work, and iterative feedback. At the beginning of the internship, I will introduce core concepts in documentary storytelling, interviewing, visual composition, and editing by walking through real creative decisions made during production.

As interns gain confidence, they will take on progressively more responsibility, from observing interviews and assisting with production, to conducting interviews, proposing creative concepts, editing sequences, and presenting their own storytelling ideas. Throughout each project, I will provide regular feedback on both technical execution and creative choices, explaining not only what could be improved but why certain storytelling approaches are more effective.

Mentorship is a central component of the internship. Each week includes dedicated one-on-one feedback sessions where we review creative work, discuss storytelling choices, identify strengths, and set learning goals for upcoming projects.

Throughout the internship, I will provide guidance on documentary interviewing techniques, directing authentic conversations, cinematography, editing for emotional impact, and adapting stories for digital audiences. Interns will receive iterative feedback throughout production rather than only at the end of projects, helping them understand the creative reasoning behind editorial decisions.

In addition to technical skills, we will discuss career pathways within documentary filmmaking, digital media, and independent creative work. I will also provide portfolio feedback and advice on presenting projects when applying for future internships, freelance opportunities, or full-time creative roles.
