Are you ready to turn your education into action? If you are interested in education, social work, outdoor recreation, environmental education, service learning, or psychology, Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp is a great starting point. We have positions available for September through May, with an option to stay on for June and July in our Summer Program.

During the school year, Ameri Corps Counselors serve in the local schools as tutors and mentors to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. They lead them in a variety of activities, including team-building initiatives, social/emotional learning, gardening, cooperative games, service learning, etc. Additional responsibilities include facilitating on-site experiential learning days, organizing community service projects throughout the year, and counseling camper groups during four two-day weekend sessions.

During summer, Ameri Corps Counselors live at the camp from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon each week, are responsible for up to 12 campers in a cabin, and lead them in all camp activities. Ameri Corps Counselors make lifelong connections with co-counselors, change young lives, and grow individually.

Ameri Corps members have the option to serve during the school year, summer, or both. There is a limited option for part time hours which can be discussed during the interview process.

At Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp, our mission is building young lives through innovative education, outdoor recreation, and family involvement with the Pfeifer Camp Ameri Corps Program, Summer Camp, and the Counselor-In-Training (CIT) programs. Through our work with at-risk youth, we have received many local, national, and international awards, and were named a National Exemplary Substance Abuse Prevention Program. Our director was named a Champion of Change by the White House in 2012.

Duties of an Ameri Corps Counselor

• Serve in local schools as tutors, mentors, and team-building activity specialists
• Serve in summer as mentors living in the cabins with a group of campers and a co-counselor
• Participate in local service opportunities

Qualifications of Ameri Corps Counselor

• Must be a United States citizen, a United States National, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must pass an Arkansas State Police Criminal History Check, NSOPW (National Sex Offender Public Registry) check, an FBI background check, National Service Criminal History Checks, and other possible background checks.
• High school diploma

Preferred Qualifications of Ameri Corps Counselor

• Bachelor’s degree or college experience
• Experience working with youth
• Experience in a camp or other residential setting
• Experience working in a school setting
• Certification in First Aid/CPR and/or lifeguarding
