Job Summary

Join Colorado College and help shape the future of cultural stewardship. Working closely with the Director of Visual Arts & Museum, you will oversee collections management, lead a dedicated team, and advance NAGPRA compliance while fostering trusted, collaborative relationships with Tribal Nations, descendant families and communities, and campus stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Set strategy for collections stewardship in consultation with the Director of Visual Arts & Museum, including art storage planning, preventive conservation, inventory planning and execution, and tracking of accessions and deaccessions; maintain environmental standards, integrated pest management, and the collections emergency preparedness and response plan; create work plans and delegate appropriately.
  • Coordinate NAGPRA compliance for all collections at Colorado College in partnership with the Director and campus partners, including Tribal consultation and partnership development, distribution of inventories, preparation of Federal notices, facilitation of repatriations, and management and archiving of related data and communications; serve as liaison to the National NAGPRA Program and relevant federal and state agencies and to NAGPRA consultants.
  • Oversee the museum’s incoming and outgoing loan program, directing the work of the Assistant Registrar, who coordinates day‑to‑day loan logistics; review and approve loan and exhibition agreements, condition reports, and facility reports for special exhibitions and permanent installations; serve as liaison to the college’s office of insurance and risk management; arrange insurance coverage for all museum objects, including during shipping, and file claims as necessary.
  • Oversee the inventorying, documentation, and cataloguing of all museum objects and acquisitions; guided by principles of critical cataloguing, manage the museum’s collections database in consultation with campus partners and Tribal and descendant community advisors, and broaden access to collections data.
  • Supervise collections staff, including the Assistant Registrar and Collections Assistant, interns, volunteers, and contract conservators; draft and recommend collections policies in consultation with museum and FAC leadership; manage the department’s operations budget and support grant development and reporting; facilitate collections‑based academic and public engagement in partnership with the Academic Engagement Manager; process gifts, acquisitions, and rights and reproduction requests.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, art, art history, history, anthropology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Plus a minimum of three years of progressively responsible collections experience in a museum setting, including demonstrated supervisory or project leadership experience.
  • Experience supporting or leading NAGPRA compliance efforts, including Tribal consultation, documentation, and repatriation processes.
  • Familiarity with collections management systems such as Past Perfect or comparable databases.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift, carry, and push/pull objects up to 50 pounds, including rare objects.
