The Family & Graduate Housing team manages the housing units and leasing process for the students and their families living in our graduate-upper division residence halls and apartment complexes. This role is responsible for the leadership, management, and coordination of a residential community in the University Apartments. They will work collaboratively with colleagues on campus to support the University Housing mission and vision, build safe, inviting communities through leadership, supervision, crisis management, and implementation of a residential curriculum.
Responsible for the leadership, management and coordination of three apartment communities (1120 units), housing approximately 2500 residents from over 70 countries, primarily graduate students and their families. Administers the residential curriculum that includes community development activities, learning opportunities, emergency/crisis response, supervision of staff, and facility related issues within the residential community. Provides direction in meeting the needs of the residents which include domestic and international students and their families, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff.
Through coordination with professional and paraprofessional staff and by working directly with residents, ensures that services and the living environment meet the daily needs and mission of the community.
Community Development and Leadership Responsibilities
- Assume leadership role in development of a safe, positive, and welcoming apartment community environment through promotion of the Illinois Residential Experience.
- Coordinate staff intervention regarding resident concerns, conflicts, and crisis. Assist staff in resolving interpersonal and inter-group conflicts and mediate as needed. Engage residents in learning communication and problem-solving skills.
- Identify assessment best practices and assist in the development of community and activities that support the implementation of the Residential Curriculum.
- Implement evaluation and assessment of curricular strategies within their communities.
- Provide guidance and support to staff, residents, and resident groups in planning and developing programs to meet the needs of the community. Particular attention will focus on the needs of international residents and families.
- Assist with the development and implementation of resident orientation programs and activities.
- Enhance resident development opportunities through advising of resident groups.
- Educate residents, faculty and staff regarding University and Housing policies and procedures. Identify and address behaviors that violate community standards and University and Housing policies.
- Serve as professional staff on-call for check-ins and emergency response.
- Serve as primary resource for incidents of domestic violence.
Staff Supervision, Recruitment, and Training Responsibilities
- Supervisors engage in and implement University Housing’s inclusion, culture, and climate initiatives.
- Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate the neighborhood assistants.
- Oversee the development of strategies and lesson plans to meet outcomes for the residential curriculum in their communities.
- Plan and facilitate regular staff meetings and staff development.
- Assist with the development and implementation of staff training.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
