Help Expand Access to Mental Health Support, Education, and Resources in South Carolina

Want hands‑on experience in mental health while building skills for a career in counseling, psychology, social work, public health, or nonprofit leadership?

The National Mental Health Corps is seeking a full‑time Ameri Corps Member to serve with the SC Empowerment Centre in South Carolina. This role offers a unique opportunity to support and expand community‑based mental health initiatives focused on wellness, education, outreach, and reducing stigma.

As an Ameri Corps Member, you’ll contribute directly to programs that strengthen local mental health capacity. You’ll support outreach efforts, help deliver mental health education, assist with community partnerships, and contribute to program development and evaluation—all while gaining real‑world experience in the mental health field.

This position is ideal for recent graduates, gap‑year participants, early‑career professionals, and anyone interested in mental health, social services, public health, nonprofit work, or community outreach.

• $21,000 living stipend paid biweekly throughout the service term
• $7,395 Segal Ameri Corps Education Award upon successful completion of service which can be used to pay qualified federal student loans and costs of continuing education
• Hands‑on experience in community mental health programming and outreach
• Training in evidence‑based or evidence‑informed mental health practices
• Direct experience delivering education, workshops, and community presentations
• Exposure to nonprofit operations, grant writing, and program reporting
• Experience in partnership development with local organizations and service providers
• Marketing and communications experience (social media, newsletters, flyers, outreach materials)

• Support planning and implementation of community mental health programs and initiatives
• Participate in required NMHC and host site trainings and professional development
• Conduct outreach to increase awareness of mental health services and resources
• Deliver presentations, workshops, and educational sessions on mental health topics
• Support efforts to reduce stigma and promote mental wellness in the community
• Build and maintain relationships with community organizations and service providers
• Assist in developing referral pathways and collaborative partnerships
• Support grant writing, reporting, and program evaluation activities
• Assist with communications and outreach through social media, newsletters, and flyers
• Contribute to projects that expand access to mental health support and services
