A Social Caseworker provides a full range of intake and/or ongoing social casework services dependent upon the needs of the Department. Areas covered may include child abuse and neglect cases, youth-in-conflict cases, family preservation services, independent living, children in foster care and adults unable to protect their own interests. WCDHS Caseworkers are referred to as Generalist Caseworkers as opposed to specializing in a certain area of the profession.
There are approximately 50 plus referrals a year. We also have a Mentor Program, and a Collaborative Management Program that may add children and families to a caseload. The Caseworkers have an approximate caseload of eight families. We have about five children in kinship care or foster care over the period of a year and the other families we work with are children who are at home and either have a voluntary case or are part of a Civil Court Dependency and Neglect (D & N) case.
The beginning salary of $3300/month is minimum and may be more depending on experience and/or similar type experience.
Requirements for the position:
- Bachelor’s degree in one of the human behavioral science fields (Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services) from an accredited college/university.
- A newly hired Child Welfare Caseworker is required to successfully complete the Colorado Department of Human Services training requirements for caseworkers within the mandated time frames to be eligible for continued employment.
- Current and valid Colorado Driver’s License
- Ability to pass a background check
- Ability to work with a team and receive feedback in a professional manner from peers and a supervisor
- Be available on an as needed basis, for late evening hours to address crisis situations and participation in the paid emergency on-call schedule
Have the Ability to:
- Assess safety of a child/youth and make decisions based on information available, which could include removing a child from their home
- Document extensive facts about what is observed.
- Prepare court reports, social histories and report of contact notes.
- Develop treatment plans with the family specific to the needs of the family.
- Testify in court
- Provide home or office based services to clients as needed
- De-escalate potentially volatile situations
- Utilize family engagement skills within the office, in client homes, and in the community to mitigate risk and enhance safety of children
- Advocate for families and children.
- Have time management skills
- Maintain and upgrade professional knowledge, skills, and development through required continued education.
