Job Summary
Dennis Group Civil Engineers focus on the land development and infrastructure for our industrial projects that involve designing and building new food and beverage process facilities. Our civil engineers have strong technical and design ability and excellent communication skills in designing land development plans, building pads, infrastructure for new buildings, landscaping, and everything from the foundation and below. Civil engineers are part of our Building Systems department and work closely with structural engineers and architects/designers.
They are also involved with bid evaluation and local contractor initial contact in multiple project locations. The role is highly valuable at Dennis Group and faces engineering challenges that require strong calculation skills; experienced engineers should hold a Professional Engineer License (PE).
- Applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment
- Performs moderate and complex design tasks, receives guidance when necessary, on unconventional or complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria
- Designs a complete project, prepares complete project documentation, including complete CAD drawings
- Performs procurement tasks such as bid list development, contractor initial contact, bid tabulation, and preliminary bid evaluation
- Has understanding of discipline specific plan elements, and how to navigate a set of drawings
- Performs construction administration tasks including complex submittal review
- Responds to RFIs
- Manages mid‑size project primary client technical contract
- Develops site of design document
- Edits project specifications
- Develops parking lot layout that satisfies development ordinances and regulations
- Analyzes and designs institutional, industrial, and commercial building sites
- Prepares addenda documentation and narratives
- Evaluates proposals and provides recommendations for sub‑consultants
- Provides expertise in site layout, storm drainage – hydraulics and hydrology, site utilities (fire protection, water distribution, pump station)
- Reviews historical site drawings to determine if site objectives align with existing conditions
- Understands pavement materials, designs pavement sections, and construction methods
- Determines land use characteristics and assigns runoff coefficients
- Calculates times of concentration
- Prepares storm water pollution prevention plan
- Conducts pre‑development hydrologic analysis
- Delineates complex watersheds and determines how to model the watershed
- Develops design approach for site factoring in topography, existing drainage conditions, outfalls, site constraints, etc.
- Designs detention pond and outlet control structures to meet pre‑development discharge rate
- Designs channel linings
- Advances site grading using Civil 3D
- Verifies restraint calculations for pressure systems
- Understands BMPs for EPSC and writes the narrative
- Prepares storm drainage report
- Prepares engineering calculations and sketches
- Prepares land development plans, site grading, utility and drainage design for planning, permitting and construction for food and beverage processing facilities
- Reviews drawings and coordinates the project team
- Prepares bid packages and provides construction administration
- Develops bidder list
- Visits project sites to observe field conditions
- Evaluates design constraints and resolves problems
- Researches civil engineering materials and best practices
- Supports talent growth within the organization
- Handles complex issues with minimal supervision and advises subordinate team members on solutions
- Provides coaching and/or mentoring to a subordinate group when directed by supervisor
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- 8+ years of experience in civil engineer tasks involving industrial construction projects (foundation and below aspects – design of land development, building pads, and infrastructure for new builds, etc.)
- 8+ years of experience in drainage, grading and utility design for industrial or commercial projects
- 8+ years of experience in AutoCAD and Civil 3D
