Job Description

Atlas is seeking a Transportation Engineer to support Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Section 130 railroad-highway crossing safety projects involving CSXT rail corridors. In this role, you will contribute to projects that improve transportation safety by supporting crossing evaluations, engineering plan development, field documentation, and coordination with public agencies and project stakeholders.

This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys combining technical design, fieldwork, and collaboration to help deliver transportation safety improvements from project initiation through closeout.

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop and review railroad crossing signing and marking plans using Micro Station and CADD tools.
  • Support field observations, data collection, safety assessments, and project documentation for highway-rail crossing improvements.
  • Assist with engineering evaluations related to warning devices, crossing surfaces, traffic operations, and railroad coordination.
  • Prepare exhibits, quantity calculations, meeting documentation, plan markups, and project support materials.
  • Coordinate with GDOT, CSXT, local agencies, and internal project teams to support project delivery and compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to project tracking, reporting, closeout activities, and continuous improvement of railroad crossing safety programs.
You’ll thrive here if you have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a strong foundation in transportation infrastructure and roadway design.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in transportation, highway, traffic, railroad, or closely related disciplines.
  • Experience supporting plan development, technical reviews, field investigations, and project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with GDOT, railroad partners, local agencies, and consultant teams to keep projects moving forward.
  • Proficiency with Micro Station, CADD, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Earth KMZ files, and Street View
    .
  • Experience with railroad crossing signing and marking projects
    ; experience outside of traditional highway construction is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of MUTCD requirements and Georgia railroad crossing signing and marking standards and practices.
  • Understanding of railroad crossing warning systems, pre-emption operations, crossing surface design, and related engineering practices
    .
  • Familiarity with GDOT railroad project processes
    , public project delivery requirements, and agency coordination.
  • Knowledge of the Georgia railroad network and the unique considerations involved in highway-rail crossing safety improvements.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills, with a commitment to delivering quality work that enhances public safety and community infrastructure.
