The Human Resources Manager will be the main point of contact for our 85-person law firm, supporting attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff. This role is both strategic and operational, serving as the primary HR resource for the firm as well as maintaining compliance, strong employee relations, and a professional, collaborative culture. The person will report into the firm’s Chief Operating Officer.
Responsibilities- HR Operations & Strategy
- Manage all HR functions as a lead HR professional
- Develop and maintain firm HR policies, employee handbook, and procedures
- Oversee HR systems, vendors, and records management
- Serve as HRIS administrator; provide system support and troubleshoot user issues
- Recruitment & Onboarding
- Assist with recruitment for attorneys and staff
- Coordinate with partners, senior associates and leads on hiring needs
- Manage onboarding, orientation, and initial training for new hires
- Oversee background checks, offer letters, and employment documentation
- Employee Relations
- Serve as first point of contact for employee concerns and HR inquiries
- Assist with workplace investigations and recommending appropriate actions
- Support performance improvement, coaching, and disciplinary processes
- Foster a respectful, professional workplace culture
- Performance Management & Training
- Support annual performance review process for attorneys and staff
- Support mentoring, evaluation, and feedback programs
- Compensation, Benefits & Payroll
- Administer payroll, benefits, and leave programs (with external vendors as applicable)
- Support compensation planning and annual salary review processes
- Manage benefits enrollment, renewals, and employee communications
- Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive employee information
- Manage workers’ compensation, leaves of absence, and ADA accommodations
- Support audits and employment-related reporting
- Bachelor’s degree and minimum 5 years of HR experience in a law firm environment (preferred)
- Strong working knowledge of HR function and best practices
- Excellent judgment, discretion, confidentiality and professionalism
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities independently
- Comfortable working directly with partners and senior leadership
