Job Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate one or more types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front‑end loaders, to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard‑surface pavement.
The operator may also repair and maintain equipment and assist entry‑level employees with maintenance tasks. The role includes rigorous safety compliance, routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and reporting of defects to management. The operator helps identify underground and overhead utilities, reviews trenching requirements, and maintains clear communication with foremen and superintendents.
Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment under varying conditions.
- Follow OSHA safety procedures and company protocols.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Report equipment defects to project foreman or safety director.
- Assist in training entry‑level employees on maintenance.
- Identify underground and overhead utilities before excavation.
- Review trenching requirements and secure necessary protection.
- Maintain communication with project managers regarding any actions that may affect operations.
- Complete other duties as assigned by management.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 6–12 months of operating construction equipment experience, or equivalent education and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles.
- Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions standard to heavy equipment operations.
- OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR certification.
- Ability to read and comprehend grade stakes and/or site plans.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Mathematical proficiency with fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Dependable attendance schedule.
- Ready to travel as needed.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
- Ability to work 8–12 hour days, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekends and evenings.
- Physical ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs and perform manual work in variable weather.
