Job Summary:Under the direction of the Community Education Director and the coordination of the Dutchmen Explorer's Club Coordinator and DEC/Wrap Around Site Leader, the DEC Assistant is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of the Dutchmen Explorer's Club and Wrap Around program and its daily activities. This classification provides assistance by participating in and supervising the daily activities and site areas in accordance with program guidelines, operations and daily plans.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Assists in supervising assigned activities, events, field trips and/or areas, as delegated.
- Assists in implementing and carrying out scheduled daily activities for both regular and non-school days to support each child's developmental physical, emotional, mental and social needs. Supervises exercises, activities, field trips, and crafts weekly and implements the plans daily.
- Supervises the children and program activities to maintain their safety and health.
(a) Assists children in working out their conflicts.
(b) Serves as a role model and interacts with children using positive reinforcement, redirection and positive communications.
- Monitors and supervises the behavior of children to enforce the rules and guidelines of the DEC/Wrap Around program and to ensure the safety of children. Follows and enforces the policies and procedures of the DEC/Wrap Around program.
(a) Provides assistance to students in daily concerns, problems, and/or issues.
(b) Prepares and sets up snacks. Cleans all messes and spills. Replenishes supplies and materials as necessary.
(c) Assists and participates in the cleaning, organizing and set up of games, materials or supplies needed prior to and during the program.
(d) Models and guides students in age appropriate language, skills, and play. Assists students self help skills.
(e) Documents students behaviors and notes.
(f) Interacts with and supervises children in free play, structured small group play, events or assigned areas, and activities.
- Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Requires a minimum of working towards a High School Diploma, and at least 16 years of age; some prior child care experience and/or evidence of equivalent education and experience necessary to perform the requirements of the work. May be required to be certified in First Aid and CPR upon hire or within six (6) months of employment.
Essential Knowledge And Specialized Subject Knowledge Required To Perform The Essential Functions Of The Job:- Knowledge of assigned program operational policies and procedures.
- General fundamentals of child development stages, parenting and age appropriate behaviors/needs.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and general sanitation practices.
- Basic behavioral strategies.
- Ability to learn, follow, and apply department activities, childcare procedures and routines of the Dutchmen Explorer's Club/Wrap Around Programs.
- Skilled in applying judgement and care in supervising, monitoring and providing for the care of children of various ages.
- Informing and advising site personnel of problems or issues concerning safety or behavioral incidents that require the attention of site personnel.
- Skilled in providing age appropriate activities that will provide the child with activities to stimulate their creativity, imagination, communication skills, or ability to interact with others.
- Ability to read, analyze and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and memos.
- Public and client centered skills that require tact, courtesy, and cooperation when dealing with parents, staff, and children primarily for the purposes of providing and exchanging information.
- Ability to effectively interact and supervise children in various structured and unstructured activities.
Duties are generally performed in a typical school setting where there are minimal environmental hazards and risks. Employee may be exposed to some disagreeable conditions involving human/student contact and exposure to minor illness.
