Job Overview
  • Assigned to major, multi-year projects of exceptional complexity, the Senior Project Planning & Scheduling Specialist serves as a subject matter expert in project planning, scheduling, and controls. This role requires advanced expertise in Primavera P6, extensive knowledge of project scheduling methodologies, and the ability to provide strategic guidance on best practices. The incumbent operates independently, exercising a high degree of judgment in solving complex project challenges while providing scheduling leadership across large-scale capital projects.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and manage realistic project plans and schedules that support project objectives, milestones, and delivery commitments.
  • Ensure compliance with established project planning and scheduling procedures, standards, and systems.
  • Establish and maintain proper Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), coding structures, and resource assignments within project schedules.
  • Implement and manage Earned Value Management (EVM) processes, ensuring accurate reporting of Schedule Performance Index (SPI), earned value metrics, and performance trends.
  • Review, evaluate, and integrate contractor schedules to ensure alignment with project requirements, contractual obligations, and scheduling standards.
  • Coordinate schedule updates by incorporating actual progress, forecasting remaining durations, evaluating critical paths, and monitoring project milestones and completion dates.
  • Apply practical construction and field experience, combined with advanced scheduling expertise, to identify schedule constraints, risks, and potential delays.
  • Develop mitigation strategies, recovery schedules, and corrective action plans to address schedule impacts and maintain project performance.
  • Perform what-if analyses and schedule impact assessments to evaluate alternative scenarios, project changes, and risk events.
  • Proactively monitor and report project schedule status, highlighting risks, trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Effectively communicate schedule performance, risks, mitigation strategies, and recovery plans to Project Managers, Construction Managers, Project Controls Supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide expert recommendations on project planning and scheduling best practices.
  • Analyze and resolve complex scheduling issues while supporting informed project decision-making.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, requiring guidance only in highly complex or unprecedented situations.
Qualifications
  • Postsecondary education in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related discipline.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in project planning, scheduling, and project controls, preferably within large-scale engineering, construction, or infrastructure projects.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Primavera P6 scheduling software.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of Earned Value Management (EVM) principles and scheduling best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver quality results with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder management abilities, with the capability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
