Guidance Counselor Position at Proctor High School

Proctor High School is seeking a guidance counselor beginning in the 2026-27 school year.

Position Summary

The high school counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program designed to support the academic, career, college, social-emotional, and personal development of all students. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, staff, and community partners to ensure every student is prepared for success in high school and beyond.

The high school counselor serves as a student advocate, resource coordinator, and educational partner who helps create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student achievement and well-being.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Comprehensive School Counseling Program
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the Minnesota School Counselor Association (MSCA) framework and the ASCA National Model.
  • Utilize student data to identify needs, establish goals, and measure program effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, support staff, families, and community organizations to improve student outcomes.
  • Promote equitable access to academic opportunities, postsecondary planning, and student support services.
Academic Planning and Student Success
  • Assist students in developing and monitoring individual academic plans.
  • Support students with course selection, registration, graduation planning, and academic goal setting.
  • Monitor student progress toward graduation requirements and communicate regularly with students and families regarding academic standing.
  • Collaborate with teachers and intervention teams to identify and support students experiencing academic challenges.
  • Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MnMTSS) and other student support processes.
College, Career, and Postsecondary Readiness
  • Guide students in exploring career interests, postsecondary education opportunities, military service, apprenticeships, and workforce pathways.
  • Coordinate career and college readiness activities, including career fairs, college visits, financial aid workshops, scholarship opportunities, and postsecondary planning events.
  • Assist students and families with college applications, scholarship applications, FAFSA completion, and other postsecondary planning processes.
  • Support the implementation of Individual Learning Plans and other career development activities.
Social-Emotional and Personal Development
  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling related to educational, social-emotional, and personal concerns that impact student success.
  • Assist students in developing skills related to self-awareness, decision-making, conflict resolution, resilience, and self-advocacy.
  • Respond to student crises and collaborate with school and community resources to support student needs.
  • Make referrals to school-based and community mental health providers and social service agencies as appropriate.
  • Support district efforts to foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environment.
Family and Community Partnerships
  • Partner with families to support student growth, academic planning, and postsecondary readiness.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, community agencies, and postsecondary institutions.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding available resources and support services.
  • Participate in family engagement and community outreach activities.
Collaboration and Leadership
  • Participate as an active member of building leadership teams, student support teams, and other collaborative groups.
  • Consult with teachers and staff regarding student needs and effective support strategies.
  • Provide professional learning and resources related to student development, mental health, and college and career readiness.
  • Support district initiatives related to student achievement, belonging, engagement, and well-being.
Program Evaluation and Accountability
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Analyze attendance, behavior, academic, and postsecondary outcome data to identify student needs and program priorities.
  • Evaluate counseling program effectiveness and recommend continuous improvements.
  • Complete required reports and maintain student confidentiality in compliance with FERPA and applicable laws.

Required job qualifications include a master's degree in school counseling or a related field, a valid Minnesota school counselor license, knowledge of Minnesota graduation requirements, postsecondary planning processes, and student support systems, knowledge of FERPA and applicable state and federal regulations, at least 25 years of experience working with high school students in a counseling role, commitment to student success and educational equity, strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills, knowledge of adolescent development and student mental health, ability to collaborate…
