About the Job

The Department of Music in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for an Assistant Professor/Instructor of Low Brass. This is a non-tenure earning, nine-month 100% appointment that will begin August 24, 2026. Primary responsibilities will be to teach applied low brass lessons to undergraduate music students, and other courses commensurate with background and experience.

Job Duties
  • Teach applied lessons in the low brass area on trombone, euphonium and tuba
  • Teach courses in the music area curriculum (may include jazz ensemble, brass techniques, chamber music and music liberal education offerings).
  • Actively recruit and retain students for the Department of Music.
  • Engage in outreach activities to promote the Department of Music within the university and the broader community.
  • Engage in department, college, and university service, including participation in faculty meetings, committees, academic advising, and events that contribute to the growth and success of the Department of Music.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Instructor (Job Code - 9404) : masters degree
  • Teaching Assistant Professor (Job Code - 9403T) : terminal degree
  • Record of musical performance on low brass instruments and a record including successful teaching of trombone, euphonium and tuba.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years successful experience teaching trombone, euphonium and tuba teaching and performance-related classes at the collegiate level.
  • The applicant's candidacy will also be enhanced by a record demonstrating the ability to recruit and maintain a low brass studio as well as excellence teaching other discipline related courses.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $44,144 per year - $49,144 per year
- Instructor (Job Code 9404) or $48,000 per year - $55,000 per year
- Teaching Assistant Professor (Job Code 9403T); depending on education/qualifications/experience
