Job Overview
Construction Code Representative 1 – Intermittent, remote or office based within Minnesota. The role focuses on the construction season, inspecting electrical installations to ensure compliance with Minnesota statutes and the National Electrical Code (NEC). The representative safeguards the safety and health of building occupants and users by applying electrical theory and construction principles.
Responsibilities- Conduct electrical inspections for compliance with the NEC and the Electrical Act, collaborating with stakeholders to promote high‑quality installations.
- Establish and manage an inspection office, remaining available to clientele as needed.
- Administer electrical statutes and rules, ensuring qualified persons engage in safe work practices.
- Inspect and monitor transitory projects such as carnival and circus spots, special events, county fairs, movie sets, and road contractors.
- Support supervisors and managers with duties that enable the division to meet its goals effectively.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Current Minnesota Class A Journey worker Electrician or Class A Master Electrician license.
- Knowledge of the Minnesota Electrical Act, Rules, regulations and standards regarding electrical safety, inspections and licensing.
- Knowledge of electrical theory and the National Electrical Code.
- Understanding of electrical construction and maintenance work, including the use of materials, equipment and tools.
- Working knowledge of building and related construction codes for electrical installations.
- Ability to read drawings, specifications, manufacturer’s instructions and other technical information as they relate to electrical installations.
- Ability to inspect work for compliance with statutes, rules and codes within the Department’s authority.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad base of clientele and DLI personnel.
- Excellent communication skills with individuals of diverse backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, languages and experiences.
- Minnesota Class A Master Electrician license.
- Completion of a 2‑year technical college program in electrical construction and/or maintenance, or equivalent training.
- Experience planning and laying out electrical work for licensed contractors or registered employers.
- Experience enforcing electrical licensing and inspection laws and rules.
- Experience inspecting electrical wiring for a governmental authority.
- Experience managing construction projects or business activities involving multiple employees or contractors.
- Language skills other than English (e.g., Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen, ASL).
All final candidates must submit to a background investigation prior to employment. The investigation may include SEMA4 Records Check, Employment Reference Check, Criminal History Check, Driver’s License Check, Social Security and Address Verification, Conflict of Interest Review, and Education/License Verification.
