Job Summary

Dennis Group Civil Engineers focus on land development and infrastructure for our industrial projects that involve designing and building new food and beverage process facilities. Our civil engineers have strong technical and design ability and excellent communication skills in designing land development plans, building pads, and infrastructure for new buildings, landscaping, and everything from the foundation and below. Civil engineers are part of our Building Systems department and work closely with structural engineers and architects/designers.

They are also involved with bid evaluation and local contractor initial contact in multiple project locations. The role is highly valuable at Dennis Group and faces engineering challenges that require strong calculation skills and for experienced engineers to have a Professional Engineer License (PE). As a member of our civil team, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities
  • Applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment.
  • Performs moderate design tasks; receives guidance when necessary on unconventional or complex problems; direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria.
  • Prepares partial to complete project documentation, including complete CAD drawings.
  • Performs procurement tasks such as bid list development, contractor initial contact, bid tabulation, and preliminary bid evaluation.
  • Has understanding of discipline‑specific plan elements, and navigates a set of drawings.
  • Performs construction administration tasks including complex submittal review.
  • Responds to RFIs.
  • Handles small to mid‑size project primary client technical contract.
  • Develops site basis of design document.
  • Edits project specifications.
  • Develops parking lot layout that satisfies development ordinances and regulations.
  • Analyses and detailed designs of institutional, industrial, and commercial building sites.
  • Reviews historical site drawings to determine if site objectives align with existing conditions.
  • Understands pavement materials, design of pavement sections, and construction methods.
  • Determines land use characteristics and assigns runoff coefficients.
  • Calculates times of concentration.
  • Does pre‑development hydrologic analysis for simple sites.
  • Delineates complex watersheds and determines how to model watershed.
  • Develops design approach for site factoring in topography, existing drainage conditions, outfalls, site constraints, etc.
  • Designs detention pond and outlet control structure to meet pre‑development discharge rate.
  • Designs channel linings.
  • Advances site grading using Civil 3D.
  • Executes restraint calculations for pressure systems.
  • Understands BMPs for EPSC.
  • Prepares storm drainage report.
  • Prepares engineering calculations and engineering sketches.
  • Prepares land development plans, site grading, utility and drainage design for planning, permitting and construction for food and beverage processing facilities.
  • Reviews drawings and coordinates the project team.
  • Prepares bid packages and provides construction administration.
  • Develops bidder list.
  • Visits project sites to observe field conditions.
  • Evaluates design constraints and resolves problems.
  • Researches civil engineering materials and best practices.
  • Supports talent growth within our organization.
  • Provides coaching and/or mentoring to a subordinate group when directed by supervisor.
Required Education, Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 4–7 years of experience in civil engineering tasks involving industrial construction projects (foundation and below aspects – design land development, building pads, and infrastructure for new builds).
  • 4–7 years of experience in drainage, grading and utility design for industrial or commercial projects.
