Job Summary

The Director of Regulatory Affairs is responsible for engagement to inform state and provincial regulators, policy makers, and other stakeholder groups in furtherance of MRO’s vision for a secure and reliable Bulk Power System (BPS). Duties will include supporting and facilitating relationships with federal, state, local, and provincial agencies, and other stakeholder groups that support and enhance the reliability of the BPS.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage, establish, and foster positive, impactful and trusted relationships with Canadian regulators, FERC staff and Commissioners, state Public Utility Commissions, legislative bodies, state or provincial energy offices, trade groups, professional associations, and industry professionals through outreach and education related to reliability and security of the BPS.
  • Establish and grow MRO’s reputation as an independent, credible, sought after resource for technical expertise to inform decision making impactful to the reliability and security of the BPS
  • Proactively identify and pursue opportunities to expand the informational reach of MRO’s vision and mission
  • Possess and maintain current working knowledge of legislative issues and policies impacting the reliability and security of the BPS and utilize that knowledge to develop messaging customized to the audience
  • Identify and execute opportunities to increase others’ awareness of the work the ERO Enterprise is doing to protect the reliability and security of the BPS
  • Provide strategic leadership and vision, and oversee its execution for the Regulatory Affairs function at MRO
  • Represent MRO on the ERO State and Provincial Outreach Group (SPOG) and ERO International Staff Coordination and coordinate with the SPOG to meet growing demand from state and provincial regulators, trade groups, professional associations and other stakeholder groups for discussions on critical topics affecting the electricity industry
  • Identify, develop, coordinate, and oversee outreach initiatives aimed at driving increased awareness and understanding of policy decisions impacting reliability and security, targeting a range of key stakeholder audiences
  • Communicate to the MRO Board of Directors regarding regulatory affairs, including reports and presentations as needed
  • Contribute to the identification and execution of MRO’s strategic objectives and the development and management of the Regulatory Affairs department budget
  • Member of MRO’s leadership team responsible for identifying issues and proposing solutions that impact the workplace
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited institution and/or Bachelor of Science with emphasis in power systems from ABET-accredited engineering school is desired
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the energy industry preferred
  • Experience with in related functional areas including legal, government or regulatory affairs, policy analysis, is preferred.
  • Experience or familiarity with grid operations, NERC, and the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) mission preferred
  • Proficient and advanced experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and development and delivery of presentations is required
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to detail is essential
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills along with the ability to communicate complex information in an articulate, accurate, easily understandable and positive manner is required
  • Individual contributor role, no supervisory responsibilities identified at this time

Physical Working Conditions and Travel Requirements

  • Standard office environment requires mobility and sedentary work
