Description

Astera Health has an opening for a PRN (as needed) Paramedic. We’re currently looking for a PRN Paramedic who is responsible for providing pre-hospital emergency care. Our medics perform activities and functions according to MN State Department of Health rules and regulations, and Astera Health policy and procedures, all while supporting the mission of Astera Health.

Pay or shift range: $27.26 USD to $40.90 USD

  • PRN position scheduled on an as-needed basis.
  • 12 hour shifts; includes day, night, weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities
  • Performs patient care on the scene and during transport to the hospital in a safe and effective manner to provide for the physical and psychological needs of patient/family.
  • Under general direction responds to the incident scene, sizes‑up the situation on approach, begins patient contact and primary assessment survey Vital signs, airway breathing, circulation, bleeding, and life‑threatening chest injuries.
  • Utilizes established protocols to begin emergency medical care and verbalizes physician orders.
  • Performs secondary assessment of non‑life‑threatening injury/event.
  • Initiates venipuncture and IV therapy per physician's standing or verbal orders.
  • Determines the need for ALS (Advanced Life Support) procedures; will take responsibility for ET intubation and any medications administered according to physician's standing orders, physician verbal orders.
  • Observes, reports, documents subjective/objective data to maintain an accurate and timely run report.
  • Initiates and/or assists with BLS or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) in cardiopulmonary arrest (when indicated).
  • Responds swiftly, but safely to the ambulance garage and to the incident scene.
  • Always maintain safe control of the vehicle and equipment.
  • Maintains scene security for rescue personnel and bystanders.
  • Complies with established policies and procedures for safety and infection control when giving emergency medical care to ensure the well‑being of the patient and staff, i.e., contact, safe medication administration, body substance isolation.
  • Utilizes ambulance checklist routinely. Reports problems, deficits, or concerns to Ambulance Director in a timely manner to assist with safe provision and quality of care.
  • Performs routine equipment/supply/vehicle checks at beginning of shift.
  • Replaces/restocks used items and initiates requisition process as required.
  • Cleans ambulance inside and out per established procedure after each run, as needed.
  • Under the direction of ER RN or RN Supervisor, performs assigned tasks in the ER such as triage, monitoring vitals, interpreting heart monitor strips, assisting with physical transfers, assisting the physician as directed, administering meds, intubation, initiating venipuncture and IV therapy, and doing blood glucose monitoring.
  • May be assigned to participate in SWAT training and provide paramedic services to SWAT personnel as requested.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Physical Requirements
  • Heavy Duty:
    Exerting 50‑100 pounds of force occasionally or 25‑50 pounds of force frequently, or 10‑20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body (based on U.S. Department of Labor data). Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
