Justice North is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to ensuring that people with low incomes have access to high-quality civil legal services throughout northern Minnesota. We provide free legal assistance in matters involving housing, family safety, public benefits, consumer protection, elder law, immigration, tax, and other civil legal issues that affect stability and well-being.
Formed through the merger of Justice North and Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota, Justice North serves 33 counties across more than 52,000 square miles from eight office locations. Our approximately 70 employees work collaboratively across a large geographic region to advance access to justice, strengthen communities, and remove barriers that prevent people from obtaining the legal help they need.

Position SummaryJustice North is seeking its first dedicated Human Resources Generalist to support our growing organization of approximately 70 employees across eight offices serving 33 counties and more than 52,000 square miles of northern Minnesota. Reporting to the Co-Executive Director, this position serves as a trusted resource for employees, supervisors, and leadership while building and managing the organization's human resources function.
The Human Resources Generalist coordinates the employee lifecycle from recruitment through separation and oversees onboarding, offboarding, benefits administration, payroll support, leave administration, performance management, training coordination, personnel records, policy administration, and HR compliance. The position works closely with the Director of Finance on payroll, benefits, and HR systems while partnering with supervisors and leadership to strengthen Justice North's culture and employee experience.
As Justice North's first dedicated HR professional, this position will help build systems, improve processes, and ensure employees and supervisors receive proactive, responsive HR support.
Essential Functions:Recruitment & Hiring
- Coordinate recruitment from posting through onboarding.
- Draft and post job announcements.
- Coordinate applicant communications, interviews, references, background checks, and offer letters.
- Partner with hiring managers on equitable hiring.
- Coordinate onboarding and orientation.
- Coordinate offboarding and exit interviews.
- Coordinate equipment and access with other departments.
- Administer health, retirement and other benefits.
- Administer PFML, FMLA, ADA, workers' compensation and other leave.
- Serve as primary employee resource for benefits.
- Support payroll processing.
- Maintain HRIS/payroll records.
- Coordinate personnel changes affecting payroll.
- Prepare HR reports and employment verifications.
- Coach supervisors on performance, documentation and employee relations.
- Assist with investigations and conflict resolution.
- Serve as a confidential HR resource.
- Coordinate orientations, trainings and evaluations.
- Support employee engagement and recognition.
- Recommend HR process improvements.
- Maintain handbook and HR policies.
- Monitor employment law changes.
- Support audits and grant personnel documentation.
- Maintain required employment records.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years HR experience.
- Knowledge of Minnesota employment law preferred.
- Experience with benefits, leave administration and payroll.
- Excellent judgment, communication and confidentiality.
- Inspires and motivates staff to overcome obstacles.
- Exceptional collaborative management skills; has a proven record as a team builder and team leader.
- SHRM-CP or PHR preferred.

Compensation and BenefitsJustice North offers a competitive salary based on experience, with a range of $70,000–$92,000, and an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental, life, and disability insurance; a 403(b) retirement plan; exceptionally generous paid time off; paid federal holidays; and relocation assistance for candidates who choose to move to the region.
