DATA SCIENTIST About the Role
This role is a member of the Data Science team, which is focused on developing advanced analytic models to understand consumer behaviors. The incumbent works directly with various business groups across the organization (Yearbook, Scholastic and College) to understand needs for advanced analytics and insights and recommend solutions to those needs.
Responsibilities- Support:
Develop presentations around insights and tell compelling stories with the data, delivering results to constituents at different levels—strategic, tactical, operational—across business units (Yearbook, Scholastic, College). - Update and Maintain:
Integrate and prepare large, varied datasets, both internal consumer behaviors and external and third‑party data sources such as consumer demographics, to gain a holistic understanding of consumer behaviors and preferences. - Develop:
Build and maintain predictive and machine learning models using techniques such as logistic regression, gradient boosted trees, random forest, and recurrent neural networks; create and maintain unsupervised learning algorithms for consumer segmentations using k‑means and KNN; and design recommender systems for next‑best action, product affinities, and upsell likelihood ntain systems to continuously monitor model performance, including model and feature drift. - Advise:
Oversee the implementation of the models into production AWS/Snowflake environments, ensuring models score properly. - Strengthen:
Analyze complex consumer data—including purchase transactions, demographic/psychographics, website behavior, and email marketing data—to uncover the true reasons behind data patterns and skews. Convert findings into clear, data‑backed recommendations that influence future member engagement strategies. - Help:
Recommend campaign test designs and experiments (A/B testing, champion/challenger testing, etc.), collaborate with the data engineering team to gather the right data and make recommendations for continuous data improvement and cleaning pipelines. - Typical/expected % of overnight travel:
None to Minimal.
- Experience:
At least 3 years of relevant experience, including statistical modelling and advanced machine learning techniques (supervised and unsupervised methods), experience in cloud‑based ML/AI technologies—preferably Snowflake and AWS—, programming experience in Python and/or R (both preferred) and SQL, experience using big data (billions of rows) across numerous systems and platforms, spotting and fixing standard data anomalies at this scale, and presenting complex projects to non‑technical teams. - Education:
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Applied Statistics, Mathematics or a relevant engineering discipline. Preferred master’s level degree in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, mathematics, machine learning, applied statistics or relevant engineering. - Technical
Skills:
Understanding of big data principles and technologies with working knowledge of data integration using established methodologies and technologies. - Attention to Detail:
Ability to balance hands‑on coding and modelling on a frequent basis while summarizing findings and presenting insights to non‑technical teams. Continuous Integration and Delivery (CI/CD) experience, preferably in Snowflake/AWS environments. - Collaboration & Drive:
Team player with a collaborative mindset, prioritizing impact for the business. Innovative mindset with relentless curiosity about big data and its ability to predict consumer behavior. Preferred experience in a retail setting and familiarity with advanced analytic algorithms such as consumer segmentation, consumer lifetime value, propensity to purchase models and recommendation engines.
- Competitive healthcare (health, dental, vision) and voluntary benefits including home and car insurance, pet insurance, and flexible spending account.
- 401(k) plan with immediate vesting.
- Hybrid schedule with on‑site work 3 days a week.
- Accrued paid time off and company paid holidays. For Washington residents, 13 vacation days, 8 paid sick leave, 8 company paid holidays, and family paid leave.
- Tuition reimbursement after 6 months of service.
- Pay transparency: salary range is $80,000 to $90,000 with annual bonus eligibility.
